Korea’s pageant fizzles out after ugly claims

DAEGU - Daegu police launched an investigation Saturday over a claim that organizers of a new, Korean-created international beauty pageant demanded sexual favors of contestants.

Miss Wales, 19-year old Amy Willerton, told several British media outlets, including the BBC, that contestants were offered better scores in return for having sex with organizers. She also said the situation was covered up by organizing officials by paying off the Korean police. Organizers denied allegations of sexual misconduct or bribing the police.

Willerton also said the contestants weren’t fed properly, which organizers denied, and some had to sleep in a hotel with no western-style beds, which organizers admitted.

The first Miss Asia Pacific World competition was held in three Korean cities - Seoul, Busan and Daegu - from Oct. 1 to 15. It had 49 contestants from 48 countries and combined a beauty pageant with a supermodel search. The competition, the first international beauty event started by Korea, is the brainchild of Lawrence Choi, the president of Elite Asia Pacific Group, which organizes beauty contests.

Willerton said she quit after witnessing many girls being offered better chances in the competition in exchange for sex. She said her competitors were told by organizers: “You know what to do in order to be one of the winners.”

She also said some of the organizing committee officials had touched the contestants’ waists, shoulders and arms during the competition.

Choi said her allegations were false and that maybe cultural differences accounted for Willerton’s perception of sexual harassment. “It couldn’t have happened in an open competition like this,” Choi told the JonngAng Ilbo. “I think some of the officials of the committee or sponsors patted participants’ backs and shoulders to encourage them.”

He rejected Willerton’s claim that contestants were privately asked to provide sexual favors. “I think it’s impossible because most of the officials or sponsors can’t speak English enough to deliver those words.”

On the subject of the contestants’ meals, Choi said they had been provided every meal during the event, even vegetarian meals for contestants who don’t eat meat.

Regarding the hotel without beds, Choi admitted that about 29 of the contestants had to spend a night in a holiday house without beds in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi, instead of a hotel in Seoul because the organizing committee didn’t pay hotel fees on time.

“We deeply apologize for it,” Choi said. “I accept that our management wasn’t good.”

Willerton also charged that the organizing committee officials paid off policemen in cash when sexual harassment was reported in Daegu. The policemen who were dispatched to the scene said they only received business cards from the officials.

The police said Willerton was explained her legal options at the scene, but she told police that she will confer with an international attorney in the U.K. “We’ll request corrections on the news reports of bribes run by the international media, including the BBC and Daily Mail,” an official from the Daegu District Police said. French contestant Florina Treiber won.

한국서 열린 세계 미인대회 성추행 파문 … 진실 공방 번져

“침대 없는 숙소 제공” … “템플스테이 체험 오해”

한국에서 열린 세계 미인대회에 참가한 영국 여성이 “성추행을 당했다”고 주장한 사건이 진실 게임으로 번지는 양상이다. 지난 1일부터 15일까지 서울·대구·부산 등지에서 열린 ‘미스 아시아퍼시픽 월드대회’에 영국 웨일스 대표로 참가한 에이미 윌러튼(19)이 대회 도중 귀국해 BBC·데일리 메일 등 자국 언론에 이 같은 내용을 주장했기 때문이다. 하지만 대회를 주최한 엘리트아시아퍼시픽의 최영철(43) 대표는 “그의 주장이 대부분 부풀려졌거나 문화적 차이에서 비롯된 오해”라며 반박했다.

　◆상 받으려면 성 상납하라?=윌러튼의 성 상납 제의 주장에 대해 최 대표는 “당시 참가자들을 안내한 조직위 관계자 중에는 영어를 잘하는 사람이 없었다”며 “통역을 통해 대화가 이루어졌기 때문에 그런 일이 일어날 상황이 아니었다”고 부인했다. “대회 기간 중 참가자들이 후원사 관계자들과 자리를 함께하는 행사가 많았는데 그 자리에서 나이 많은 후원사 임원들이 친밀감의 표시로 참가자들의 등을 두드리고 어깨를 쓰다듬은 것을 추행으로 오해했을 수 있다”고 해명했다. 한국과의 문화적 차이 때문에 빚어진 오해라는 설명이다.

　◆하루 한 끼의 식사만 준 적도 있다?=윌러튼은 “대회 조직위 측이 먹을 것도 제대로 주지 않았다. 하루 한 끼만 줬다”고 주장했다. 이에 대해 최 대표는 “그녀가 왜 그런 말을 했는지 이해할 수 없다”며 답답해 했다. 인도 대표 등 채식을 하는 3∼4명의 참가자에게 따로 식단을 챙겨 주는 등 최선을 다했다는 것이다. 그는 “다만 11일 수퍼탑탤런트대회를 앞두고 리허설을 하면서 도시락을 지급한 적이 있는데 일부 참가자가 도시락이 입에 맞지 않았던 모양”이라고 말했다.

　◆침대도 없는 숙소를 제공했다?=윌러튼은 “조직위 측이 침대도 없는 숙소에 몰아넣기도 하고 숙박비를 지급하지 않아 호텔에 발이 묶이기도 했다”고 말했다. 최 대표는 이 점에 대해서는 “미안하게 생각한다”며 사과했다. 서울 대회조직위원회가 호텔 숙박비를 제때 지불하지 않아 20명만 호텔에서 묵고 나머지 29명은 양평의 펜션에서 잠을 잘 수밖에 없었다고 했다. 그는 “펜션에 침대가 없었고 호텔이 아니어서 참가자들이 불만을 나타냈다”며 “진행이 매끄럽지 못했다”고 시인했다. 또 ＂한 대형사찰에서 하룻밤 템플스테이를 한 것도 불편했던 모양”이라고 말했다.

◆경찰에 돈을 주었다?=윌러튼은 “대구에서 성추행 신고를 받고 출동한 경찰관이 조직위 관계자에게서 돈을 받았다”고 말했다. 하지만 경찰 조사 결과 당시 출동한 김모(50) 경사는 대회 관계자에게서 돈이 아니라 명함을 받은 것으로 드러났다. 최 대표는 “이는 국가의 위신에 관한 중대한 문제”라며 “윌러튼이 수퍼탑탤런트대회에서 입상하지 못하자 영국으로 돌아가 사실을 과장해서 말한 것 같다”고 불쾌해 했다. 그는 “윌러튼에 대해서 대회에 끝까지 참가한다는 계약을 위반한 점을 들어 손해배상청구소송을 제기할 방침”이라고 덧붙였다.

　한편 대구 북부경찰서는 파장이 커지자 대회 관계자를 불러 윌러튼의 주장이 사실인지 확인하기로 했다.
