School field trips to Dokdo could begin next year

Starting next year, elementary, middle and high school students could have a new destination for their next field trip: the disputed Dokdo islets.

The Korean Federation of Teachers’ Association said yesterday that it was in discussions with cruise lines, including Daea Express Shipping, to begin field trip programs to Dokdo for the country’s students to coincide with the organization’s Dokdo Day next year, set for Oct. 25, 2012.

The KFTA said school field trips on cruises would “no doubt be a new adventurous experience” for students, adding that they would also reduce teachers’ burden of chaperoning their charges around the clock as is often the case on school trips.

“As school field trips on a cruise would provide students with a historical and educational experience, we ask the government and businesses to provide administrative and financial support for this program,” said a KFTA official.

For this year’s Dokdo Day, which is tomorrow, the KFTA will hold an event at the CGV movie theater in Daehangno at 2 p.m., together with the Dokdo Institute, Korea Youth Association and the teacher’s associations of 16 cities and provinces. The Hye Jung Museum of Kyung Hee University will also hold an exhibition at tomorrow’s event.

“The KFTA designated Oct. 25 as Dokdo Day, the day when King Gojong issued an Imperial Ordinance that internationally declared sovereignty over the Dokdo islets in 1900,” said Ahn Yang-ok, president of the KFTA. “I hope all Korean citizens have a sense of territorial sovereignty over Dokdo through this event on Dokdo Day.”

독도로 크루즈 수학여행 간다…교총, 추진계획 발표

한국교원단체총연합회가 25일 독도의 날을 맞아 학생들을 대상으로 독도 크루즈 수학여행을 추진한다.

교총은 25일 오후 2시 서울 대학로 CGV에서 `2011 독도의 날 기념식`을 개최하고 크루즈 수학여행 추진계획을 발표한다고 21일 밝혔다.

독도에 대한 역사교육을 강화하고 학생들의 접근성을 높일 수 있을 것이라는 기대다.

교총은 독도 크루즈 수학여행을 위해 대아고속해운 등 대형 해상 교통회사와 기업체가 컨소시엄을 구성, 운영하는 방안을 제안한다.

기념식에서는 독도 및 동해 관련 자료를 대거 소장하고 있는 경희대 혜정박물관의 고지도 전시회 등 식전행사에 이어 독도 도자기 기증, 다큐멘터리 상영, 독도아리랑 공연, 크루즈 수학여행 발표 등으로 진행된다.

내년 스승의 날을 전후해 학생, 교원 등이 요트를 이용해 독도를 직접 탐방하는 `요트 독도 세일링` 추진 계획도 밝힐 계획이다.

교총은 기념식 외에 충남 공주 신풍초, 서울 옥정중, 서울 동명여고 등 3개 학교에서 독도 특별수업을 실시한다.
