Man City humiliates United at Old Trafford

LONDON - Manchester City underlined its reputation as genuine title contenders by routing Manchester United 6-1 at Old Trafford to move five points clear of its fierce rival at the top of the Premier League on Sunday.

Mario Balotelli scored either side of United defender Jonny Evans’ sending off in the 47th minute before City added further goals through Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko (two) and David Silva, inflicting the hosts’ heaviest league defeat at Old Trafford since 1955.

City’s day got even better when third-place Chelsea lost 1-0 at Queens Park Rangers after having two players - Jose Bosingwa and Didier Drogba - sent off in a fiery west London derby.

“I’m satisfied because we beat United away and I don’t think there are a lot of teams that could win here,” said City manager Roberto Mancini, whose unbeaten team ended its rival’s 37-match unbeaten run at home in all competitions.

“I think this game is important because we beat them at Old Trafford but not for the 6-1.’’

Darren Fletcher scored a consolation for United, which fell apart after Evans’ straight red card for a professional foul on Balotelli.

It was the first time United conceded six goals at home in the league in 81 years.

“It’s the worst result in my history, ever,’’ United manager Alex Ferguson said. “I can’t believe the scoreline.’’

After weathering an early barrage by United, City took the lead in the 22nd minute when Balotelli - playing 24 hours after escaping unhurt when part of his home caught fire when a firework went off - coolly sidefooted home from just inside the box.

The Italian was then at the center of the game’s key moment, latching onto Aguero’s through-ball only to be pulled back by Evans on the edge of the area.

Referee Mark Clattenburg had no choice but to send off the Northern Ireland center back and City took full advantage.

At Loftus road Chelsea were beaten as QPR’s Heidar Helguson scored from the penalty spot after being tugged by David Luiz in the area, one of a host of indiscretions committed by Chelsea’s players in an ill-disciplined display.

Chelsea also had seven players yellow-carded by referee Chris Foy as the visitors’ temperament deserted them in a hostile atmosphere in west London.

“I’m very disappointed with Chris’ performance,’’ Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas said. “Chris and his team [of officials] managed to play an emotional game and they conceded to the crowd and committed tremendous mistakes.’’

Chelsea is a point behind United after nine games.

In the day’s other EPL matches, substitute Robin van Persie’s brace helped Arsenal beat Stoke 3-1 to move up to seventh, Everton needed late goals by Louis Saha and Jack Rodwell to defeat Fulham by the same score and Rafael van der Vaart netted twice as Tottenham beat Blackburn 2-1 to climb to fifth.

Meanwhile, in Scotland, Rangers moved nine points clear at the top of the Scottish Premier League with a 2-0 victory at Hearts on Sunday. Steven Naismith opened the scoring for the defending champion in the 20th minute and substitute Nikica Jelavic sealed the victory with 15 minutes remaining.

Rangers are yet to concede a goal in six straight away wins in the league this season.

Celtic beat 10-man Aberdeen 2-1 courtesy of goals by Ki Sung-yeung and Charlie Mulgrew to claim a first win in five league matches and climb to within a point of second-place Motherwell.

맨체스터 유나이티드(이하 맨유)의 알렉스 퍼거슨 감독은 계속해서 껌을 씹었다. 그 속도는 평소보다 두 배는 빨랐다. 맨유가 여섯 번째 실점을 했을 때, 중계 카메라가 그의 얼굴을 클로즈업했다. 태연한 듯했지만 미간은 붉게 달아올랐다. 경기가 끝난 뒤 퍼거슨 감독은 ‘인디펜던스’와의 인터뷰에서 “맨유 역사상 최악의 날이자 내 축구 인생에서도 최악의 날이다. 내가 선수 생활을 할 때도 1-6으로 진 기억은 없다”고 고개를 숙였다.

　영국 맨체스터가 연고지인 두 클럽, 맨유와 맨체스터시티(이하 맨시티)는 23일(한국시간) 맨유의 홈경기장 올드 트래퍼드에서 역사를 썼다. 맨시티는 프리미어리그 9라운드 경기에서 맨유를 6-1로 두들겼다. 맨유 팬들은 경기가 끝나기도 전에 관중석 태반을 비우고 떠났다. 맨유가 홈에서 맨시티에 6골을 내주고 지기는 1926년 1월(1-6) 이후 85년 만의 일이다. 올드 트래퍼드에서 이어온 맨유의 19연승 행진도 마침표를 찍었다.

　맨시티를 ‘시끄러운 이웃’이라고 부르며 비웃어온 맨유로서는 굴욕이다. 그러나 맨시티에는 새로운 시대의 출발을 알리는 신호탄이다. 맨시티는 67~68시즌 구단 역사상 두 번째 리그 우승을 끝으로 몰락의 길을 걸었다. 특히 99년은 최악이었다. 맨유가 트레블(프리미어리그·FA컵·챔피언스리그 동시 우승)을 달성한 그해에 맨시티는 3부리그에서 헤맸다. 그러나 이제 질곡에서 벗어나고 있다.

　2008년 9월 아랍에미리트(UAE)의 거부(巨富) 만수르 빈 자이드 알나하얀이 맨시티의 구단주로 취임했다. 알나하얀 구단주의 재산은 200억 파운드(약 36조6200억원)로 추정된다. “4년 안에 프리미어리그에서 우승하겠다”고 공언한 그는 최근 3년간 카를로스 테베스(27·아르헨티나), 실바, 배리 등 16명의 주전급 선수를 영입하는 데 약 6200억원을 썼다.

　맨유의 퍼거슨 감독은 알나하얀이 부임할 때 “돈으로 역사와 트로피를 살 수는 없다”고 비웃었다. 그러나 참혹한 패배를 당한 뒤 그는 “내게 새로운 도전장이 날아왔다”고 고백하고 말았다. 퍼거슨도 맨유도 좋든 싫든 ‘무서운 이웃’ 맨시티의 강함을 인정하지 않을 수 없게 된 것이다. 맨시티의 로베르토 만치니 감독은 “맨유는 여전히 우리보다 앞서 있다. 이 생각을 바꾸기 위해 우리는 올 시즌 프리미어리그에서 우승해야 한다”며 부드럽지만 강한 선전포고를 했다.

　어느 리그에서든 빅 클럽은 막강한 자본으로 우수한 선수를 끌어모아 상위권을 독식한다. 어느 대륙에서든 자본이 튼튼한 리그가 최강의 리그로 군림한다. 이 원리는 프리미어리그도 예외가 아니다. 맨시티보다 먼저 ‘머니풋볼’의 위력을 보여준 구단이 첼시다. 2003년 6월 중위권 클럽이던 첼시를 사들인 러시아의 석유 재벌 로만 아브라모비치는 2004년 한 해만 8800만 파운드(약 1700억원)를 선수 영입에 썼다. 첼시는 2005, 2006년 연속으로 프리미어리그 왕좌에 올랐다.

　프리미어리그에서 앞으로 지켜봐야 할 팀은 퀸스파크 레인저스다. 인도 철강왕 락슈미 미탈이 2008년 챔피언십리그(2부리그)를 전전하던 퀸스파크 레인저스를 사들였다. 팀은 올해 프리미어리그로 승격했다. 미탈은 지난 4월 20일 데일리메일과의 인터뷰에서 “퀸스파크 레인저스가 프리미어리그로 승격하면 막대한 투자를 하겠다”고 공언했다. 아직 대어급 영입은 없지만 향후 스카우트 시장에서 적극적인 움직임을 보일 가능성이 크다.
