Park Chan-ho loses spot on Buffaloes

Korean baseball pitcher Park Chan-ho has been released by his Japanese club, the Orix Buffaloes.

The Nippon Professional Baseball club announced Monday that Park, 38, will not be retained for next season. The right-hander joined the Buffaloes before the 2011 season on a one-year deal.

The former Major League Baseball All-Star pitched only seven games for the Japanese club, and none after June, going 1-5 with an ERA of 4.29. He dealt with assorted injuries all season.

Park is the first Korean to play in the majors. In 17 years with seven different MLB clubs, Park won 124 games, the most ever by an Asian pitcher in the majors, and put up a 4.36 ERA.

His best seasons came with the Los Angeles Dodgers, his first club. From 1997 to 2001, Park averaged 15 wins a season, including his career-best 18 wins in 2000.

After his lone All-Star selection in 2001, Park signed a lucrative free-agent deal with the Texas Rangers, worth $65 million over five seasons. But he was hampered by injuries during his two and a half years in Texas, and his days as a frontline starting pitcher were effectively over by 2005.

“찬호 나가라” … 오릭스 통보

박찬호(38)가 24일 일본 프로야구 오릭스에서 방출됐다.

　오릭스는 구단 홈페이지를 통해 ‘박찬호를 비롯한 외국인 선수 세 명에게 전력 외 통보를 했다’고 발표했다. 이에 따라 박찬호는 일본이나 미국 어느 구단과도 계약할 수 있는 신분이 됐다. 하지만 현재로서는 일본 내 다른 구단 이적이나 미국 복귀 모두 쉽지 않다. 국내 팀에 입단하려면 야구 규약에 따라 신인 드래프트를 거쳐야 한다.

　1994년 LA 다저스 선수로 메이저리그에 데뷔한 박찬호는 지난해까지 열일곱 시즌 동안 통산 124승98패, 평균자책점 4.36, 탈삼진 1715개를 기록했다. 124승은 아시아 출신 메이저리거로는 최다 기록이다. 2010년을 뉴욕 양키스와 피츠버그 파이리츠에서 보낸 박찬호는 그해 12월 프리에이전트(FA) 신분으로 오릭스와 총액 220만 달러에 1년 계약했다.

　박찬호는 일본 데뷔전이던 4월 16일 라쿠텐전에서 패전투수가 됐지만 6과3분의2이닝 6피안타, 3실점으로 호투했다. 4월 22일 세이부전에선 7이닝 3피안타, 무실점으로 첫 승을 따냈고, 4월 29일 라쿠텐전에서도 8이닝 9피안타, 3실점으로 3경기 연속 퀄리티스타트(선발 6이닝 이상 3자책점 이하)를 기록했다. 그러나 5월 들어 네 경기에서 3패만 기록하는 부진을 보였고, 5월 30일 2군행 통보를 받았다.

　2군에서 박찬호는 메이저리거다운 성실한 훈련태도로 호평을 받았다. 6월 30일에 1군에 복귀하라는 통보도 받았다. 그러나 복귀를 이틀 앞두고 왼쪽 허벅지에 근육통이 생겨 복귀는 불발됐다. 올해 성적은 1승5패, 평균자책점 4.29.
