After a week, no sign of famed climber and crew

The Korean Alpine Federation (KAF) said yesterday that it failed to find three mountain climbers who have been missing for a week.

Famed mountaineer Park Young-seok, 47, and two fellow climbers, Kang Ki-seok and Shin Dong-min, went missing Oct. 18 during an ascent of Annapurna in north-central Nepal. The KAF said it sent a rescue team of professional climbers and Sherpas that searched the 5,800-meter (19,000-feet) point, where they found equipment from the group.

The team used metal detectors in case the climbers were buried in snow.

“[The area] looks very clean,” said a Sherpa who participated in the search. “It looks like snow and rocks came down from the 8,901-meter peak, creating a new slope.”

When Park last contacted base camp, he reported that weather conditions were bad and that a lot of rocks were coming down from above.

The KAF was going on the assumption that the team had been hit by small avalanches because the base camp heard no massive avalanche.

Now the KAF suspects that the climbers fell into a bergschrund, a crevasse that forms when moving glacier ice separates from ice above it. The crevasse might have been formed at the same time as the avalanches.

Kim Chang-ho, a rescue team member, told the JoongAng Ilbo that rescuers got 20 meters into the bergschrund, which is estimated to be about 30 to 40 meters deep, but found no trace of the three climbers, even with metal detectors.

Even after a week, the KAF and other volunteers are continuing their search. The team consists of 14 professional mountaineers and 19 Sherpas. “We won’t give up if there is a 1 percent chance of survival,” a rescuer said “We will bring Park home to his family.”

In 2005, according to Yonhap News Agency, Park became the first person in the world to complete a true Adventurers’ Grand Slam, which entails reaching the North and South Poles and scaling the world’s 14 highest peaks.

박영석 대장, 베르크슈룬트에 빠진듯

안나푸르나 실종 7일째

지난 18일 안나푸르나 등반 도중 실종된 박영석(48·골드윈코리아·사진) 대장 일행을 수색하는 작업이 어려움에 빠졌다. 대한산악연맹은 24일 “전문 산악인 세 명과 셰르파로 구성된 구조대가 안나푸르나 남벽 아래 해발 5800m 지점을 수색했지만 흔적을 찾지 못했다”고 했다. 현장의 분위기는 비관적이라고 한다.

　사고 이튿날인 19일 오전 실종 예상지역을 수색한 이한구(43) 대원, 24일 현장을 둘러본 구조대와 셰르파는 “(사고 추정 지점이) 눈이 새로 내린 것처럼 깨끗하다”고 말했다. 쓸려내려온 돌과 눈이 많아 새로운 사면(斜面)이 만들어졌다는 뜻이다.

　실종 소식이 전해진 직후에는 박 대장 일행이 ‘분설 눈사태’를 당한 것으로 추정됐다. 베이스캠프에서 대기하던 대원들이 눈사태 소리를 듣지 못했기 때문이다. 분설 눈사태는 쌓인 눈이 쓸려내리는 형태여서 규모가 크지 않다. 그러나 베이스캠프에 함께 있던 현지인 조리사들은 “눈사태 소리를 들은 것 같다”고 했다.

　상황과 정보를 종합하면, 박 대장 일행은 눈사태 이후 눈더미가 쌓인 5800m 지점 아래 베르크슈룬트(Bergschrund)로 추락했을 가능성이 크다.

　구조대는 25일부터 금속탐지기로 베르크슈룬트를 탐색할 계획이다. 구조대원인 산악인 김창호(42)씨는 23일 출국을 앞두고 본지와 전화통화에서 “벽에서 계속 눈이 흘러내리면 (베르크슈룬트) 안으로 진입하기가 쉽지 않다”고 했다. 24일에도 셰르파가 깊이 30∼40m로 추정되는 베르크슈룬트 내부 20m까지 들어갔지만 흔적을 찾지 못했다.

　산악연맹을 비롯, 산악계에서는 계속해서 구조대를 급파하고 있다. 24일 출국한 김재수(50)·김창호씨 등 구조대원 5명은 25일 안나푸르나 남벽에 도착한다. 한국인 구조대원 14명과 셰르파 19명이 수색에 참여하게 됐다. 박 대장의 동생 상석(46)씨와 장남 성우(21)씨, 신동민(37) 대원의 아내 조순희(47)씨 등이 24일 출국했다.

　한편 박 대장이 석좌교수로 재직하고 있는 동국대도 현지 소식에 촉각을 곤두세우고 있다. 동국대 김희옥 총장은 24일 “지난여름 학생들을 이끌고 국토대장정을 떠나는 시청 앞 광장에서 굳게 악수한 게 엊그제 같다. 1%의 가능성만 있어도 포기할 수 없다. 박 대장은 무조건 살아서 돌아와야 한다”고 말했다.

◆베르크슈룬트=수직 벽에서 흘러내린 빙하가 경사가 완만한 지점과 합치는 지점에 생긴 거대 균열. 동굴처럼 입구가 크다. 크레바스(빙하의 갈라진 틈) 보다 규모가 훨씬 크다.
