Our country’s empty nest parties

We are displeased if others don’t understand our true intentions, and we feel upset and mistreated when the misunderstanding continues. The discord is especially common between parents and children. The outcome of the Seoul mayoral by-election is a similar case, as the generational gap is highlighted clearly.

The parents’ generation always feels uneasy about the children’s generation. “Will they stay on the right track? Will they be able to protect what their parents have accomplished?” the older generational asks. But the children do not understand their parents and consider themselves to be good sons and daughters by arranging overseas trips for their parents on election day. The older generation feels upset and finds their children to be ungrateful. The older generation does not have high expectation. They only hope that the country will become a better place for the next generation. But the children treat their parents as if they are outdated and backward.

A few days before the by-election, liberals held a seminar denouncing the May 16 Coup to mark the event’s 50th anniversary. I arrived at the conference room to find that nearly all of the attendees were seniors. Similar meetings in the conservative faction were also attended mostly by seniors, so I thought there would be no future for the conservatives. However, the conferences arranged by the liberal group did not attract young people either. Father Ham Se-ung, a progressive leader, lamented that only seniors came to these kinds of meetings.

Both leftist and rightist groups saw little participation from the youth. Maybe young Koreans are not interested in ideological issues. The topic of the seminar was a critical discussion of Yushin dictatorial rule. How does Yushin rule appeal to young Koreans today? The discussions among conservative groups often involve praise for President Park Chung Hee. Maybe it sounds like stories from the olden days to the young generation. The older generation, meanwhile, feels frustrated by their indifference, but it may be an inevitable generational divide.

To the older generation, the ideologies of the left and the right are significant. As long as North Korea stands in confrontation, they cannot ignore ideologies. It was the lesson of history and could be a trauma from the war. However, the young generation finds it irrelevant. They find realistic concerns far more urgent than ideological issues. They want to address unemployment, child care and early retirement. They believe that politics have to bring solutions. The yardsticks used by the left and the right cannot meet the demands of the young generation.

우리는 상대방이 진심을 이해하지 못할 때 서운한 마음을 갖는다. 이 서운함이 지나치면 괘씸한 마음으로 변한다. 이런 갈등은 특히 부모 자식간에 자주 생긴다. 서울시장 보선의 결과도 이런 갈등과 비슷한 듯하다. 세대 간의 차이가 극명하게 드러났기 때문이다.

부모세대는 자식세대를 볼 때 언제나 조마조마하다. “잘못된 길로 가지는 않을까, 부모가 어렵게 이루어 놓은 것을 지킬 수는 있을까?” 하지만 자식은 이런 부모 마음을 이해하기는 커녕 ‘선거날 부모 관광 보내는 사람이 진짜효자’라고 하니, 서운함을 넘어 괘씸한 마음이 든다. 자식세대에게 특별히 요구하는 것도 없다. 단지 이 나라가 다음 세대에도 더 살기 좋은 나라가 되었으면 하는 바램 뿐이었다. 그런 부모들을 마치 낙후된 인간처럼 치부하니 기가 막힌 것이다.

보선이 있기 며칠 전 진보진영에서 ‘5.16’ 50주년을 맞아 비판 학술대회를 열었다. 회의장에 들어서니 청중은 거의 백발 뿐이었다. 보수진영의 이런 류의 모임에 가 보아도 거의 전부가 노인이어서 “이래서야 보수의 미래가 있겠는가” 라는 생각이 들었건만 진보 모임 역시 노인뿐이었다. 좌파 대부격인 함세웅 신부는 축사를 하면서 “이런 모임에 나이 든 사람만 모여서야 되겠느냐”고 한탄했다.

좌파나 우파나 간에 젊은이들은 없었다. 이것은 무엇을 의미하는가? 진보니, 보수니 하는 이념의 문제가 젊은이들에게는 관심이 없다는 증거 아닐까? 이날 주제는 유신독재에 대한 비판이었다. 지금 젊은이에게 유신독재가 얼마만한 호소력을 가질까? 보수쪽 토론장엘 가보면 박정희 칭송 얘기가 주류이다. 이 역시 젊은이들에게는 흘러간 과거얘기로 들리는 것 아닐까? 이런 세태에 대해 기성세대들은 분개할지 모르지만 그것이 세대의 벽이라면 어쩔 수 없는 것이다.

기성세대에겐 좌우라는 이념이 중요했다. 특히 북한이라는 존재가 버티고 있는 한 이를 무시할 수 없었다. 역사가 가르쳐 준 교훈이기도 하고, 트라우마(상흔 傷痕)일 수도 있다. 그러나 새 세대는 그것을 답답하게 여긴다. 그들에겐 이런 이념문제보다 자신들의 발 앞에 놓인 문제가 더 시급하다. 취업, 자녀 양육, 조기퇴직 말이다. 그들은 정치가 이런 걸 해결해 줘야 한다고 믿는다. 좌와 우라는 잣대만으론 결코 그들의 욕구를 담아 내지 못한다.
