Rice production takes pounding

Rice production fell to the lowest level in 31 years due to a steady decrease in the size of rice paddies, a government report showed yesterday.

The country’s rice production reached 4.22 million tons this year, down 1.7 percent from 2010, according to the report by Statistics Korea.

This year’s output was the lowest since the 3.55 million ton yield in 1980, when cold weather devastated production of the staple crop, the report showed.

The average rice production for a 10-acre paddy, however, grew 2.7 percent on-year to 496 kilograms, the report showed.

“This year’s harvest was better than last year, but the decline in total rice production was due to the shrinking rice paddies,” an agency official said.

According to the report, the total area of rice paddies came to 853,823 hectares this year, down 4.3 percent from a year earlier.
