Ruling party lawmakers railroad free trade pact with U.S

테스트

Lawmakers of South Korea's ruling Grand National Party (GNP) rammed the long-pending free trade agreement with the United States through parliament Tuesday, braving a tear gas bomb set off by a protesting opposition lawmaker during a chaotic National Assembly session.

GNP lawmakers approved the trade deal in a 151-7 vote.

The passage came about a month after the U.S. Congress gave its final approval to the agreement during President Lee Myung-bak's trip to Washington last month.

Seoul and Washington hope the deal will go into effect as of Jan. 1.
