‘Swelled’ instead of ‘squeezed’ middle

The editors of the Oxford English Dictionary chose “squeezed middle” as the 2011 Word of the Year. It is defined as “the section of society regarded as particularly affected by inflation, wage freezes and cuts in public spending during a time of economic difficulty, consisting principally of those people with low or middle incomes.” British Labour Party leader Ed Miliband first used the term on a BBC radio program earlier this year, and it has been used to represent the financial pinch we all feel nowadays.

The “squeezed middle” may describe the impact of the financial crisis on household finances for the middle class. Or, it could mean the shrinking of the middle class itself as polarization of the society becomes intensified. It may also be a metaphorical expression for a middle class unable to function properly. Personally, I think the middle class has lost its function and capacity in our society.

The role and function of the “middle” is keeping a balance between the left and the right, the above and the below. In the Chinese classic “The Doctrine of the Mean,” “unswerving pivot” maintains a solid center that does not lean to one side.

This year, the interest payments for household debt surpassed 50 trillion won ($44 billion).

At the end of last year, total household debt was 797 trillion won, but it increased to 840 trillion won by the end of September. The interest rate hike added to the burden, and 5 percent of total income is used to pay interest on household debt. The excessive interest burden has translated into a serious slump in domestic consumption. Wherever you go, merchants are struggling with sluggish business. In fact, many small-business owners have decided to close their shops.

As poverty is handed down generation to generation, it becomes harder and harder to move from low to middle class. The decline of real income has also pushed middle class families down to low-class status.

A trim waist line may add to a person’s charm, but it is a very harmful shape for a society. The rich need to realize that saving the middle class from falling and helping the low class move up is the wisdom that will keep society intact and stable. It is what Warren Buffett calls “enlightened self-interest.” Hopefully someday “swelled middle” will become the term of the year instead of “squeezed middle.”

옥스퍼드 영어사전 편집진이 올해의 단어로 ‘쥐어짜인 중산층(squeezed middle)’을 선정했다고 한다. 물가 상승, 임금 동결, 공공지출 삭감 등으로 타격을 입은 중간 이하 소득 계층을 일컫는 말이라고 한다. 영국 노동당의 에드 밀리밴드 당수가 올해 초 BBC 라디오 프로그램에서 처음 사용한 이래 어려운 시대 상황을 대변하는 말로 자리 잡았다.
모르긴 몰라도 이 말을 처음 쓰면서 밀리밴드 당수는 ‘squeezed orange’란 관용적 영어 표현을 염두에 두지 않았을까 싶다. 시큼달콤한 즙을 다 짜내고 나면 더 이상 오렌지는 쓸모가 없어진다. 용도 폐기된 아이디어나 사람을 가리켜 영어로 ‘squeezed orange’라고 부른다. 사람으로 치면 토사구팽(兎死狗烹)이고, 사물이나 이념으로 치면 시대에 뒤떨어져 더 이상 쓸모가 없어진 물건이나 이데올로기일 수 있다.
‘squeezed middle’은 경제난으로 중산층의 살림살이가 팍팍해지는 현실을 빗댄 말일 수도 있고, 양극화가 심화되면서 갈수록 중산층 자체가 쪼그라드는 현실을 가리키는 말일 수도 있다. 아니면 즙을 짜내고 남은 오렌지처럼 더 이상 중산층이 제 기능을 못하는 현실을 은유하는 표현일 수 있다. 개인적으로는 ‘제 기능을 못하는 중산층’이란 쪽에 한 표 던지고 싶다.
좌·우 또는 상·하 사이에서 중심을 잡는 것이 ‘중간(middle)’의 역할이고 기능이다. 『중용(中庸)』에서 ‘중’은 기울어짐이 없는 것을 말하고, ‘용’은 영원불변이란 뜻이다. 가운데가 튼튼해야 어느 한쪽으로 치우쳐 쓰러지지 않고, 오래갈 수 있다는 철학적 의미가 담겨 있다.
올 한 해 가계 빚 이자부담이 50조원을 넘어섰다고 한다. 지난해 말 797조원이었던 가계대출이 올 9월 말 840조원으로 늘어난 데다 대출금리까지 오르면서 국민총소득의 5%를 가계부채 이자 상환에만 쓰고 있다는 것이다. 과도한 이자부담은 심각한 내수 부진으로 이어지고 있다. 어디를 가나 “장사 안 돼 죽겠다”는 소리뿐이다. 실제로 문 닫는 자영업자들이 크게 늘고 있다.
빈곤의 대물림이 일상화하면서 빈곤층에서 중산층으로 올라가기는 낙타 바늘구멍 통과하기인 반면 실질소득 감소로 빈곤층으로 추락하는 중산층은 갈수록 늘고 있다. 허리가 움푹 파인 날씬한 몸매가 사람에겐 좋을지 몰라도 사회로선 독약이다. 중산층의 빈곤층 전락을 막고, 빈곤층의 중산층 진입을 도와주는 것이 사회가 붕괴하지 않고, 안정적으로 굴러갈 수 있는 ‘공생의 지혜’라는 것을 부자들이 깨달을 때가 됐다. 그것이 워런 버핏이 말하는 ‘계몽된 이기주의’일 것이다. ‘쥐어짜인 중산층’ 대신 ‘부풀어오른 중산층(swollen middle)’이 올해의 단어가 되는 날이 다시 올 수 있을까.
