국가 위한 자기 희생 없이 말로만 떠드는 애국심이
그리스 비극의 뿌리 아닐까

아크로폴리스 정상에 올라가면 아테네 시내가 한눈에 들어온다. 풍수(風水)를 모르는 사람의 눈에도 천혜의 요충이 분명해 보인다. 삼면이 높은 산과 구릉으로 둘러싸여 있고, 나머지 한 면은 에게해(海)와 접하고 있다. 외적의 침입에 대비하면서 해상으로 뻗어나가기 좋은 조건이다. 아테네가 도시국가를 이루면서 고대 그리스 문명의 꽃을 피울 수 있었던 데는 그만한 이유가 있었던 셈이다.

고대 그리스인의 문학적 상상력은 비극에서도 전범(典範)을 보여줬다. 소포클레스가 쓴 ‘오이디푸스왕(王)’은 지금도 인간의 숙명적 한계를 통해 관객에게 카타르시스를 제공하는 비극 작품의 전형으로 꼽힌다. 운명의 굴레에서 벗어나려고 발버둥치지만 결국 영웅적 죽음으로 최후를 맞이하는 오이디푸스에게서 소포클레스는 이미 그리스의 비극을 예견했는지 모른다.
