TV enters new era with launch of four networks

The launch today of four new broadcasting stations signals major changes in the nation’s broadcasting industry, with a host of dramas, variety shows and reality shows that will compete for viewer attention.

오늘 4개 종합편성 TV채널의 개국으로 시청률 경쟁을 하는 드라마, 버라이어티 쇼, 리얼리티 쇼들이 대거 등장하면서 대한민국 방송산업에 큰 지각변동을 예고한다.
The new stations - JTBC, TV Chosun, Channel A and MBN - were authorized by the nation’s communications and broadcasting regulator about a year ago to offer general-programming content. Before today, only three terrestrial broadcasters - KBS, MBC and SBS - were allowed to offer general programming.

일년 전쯤 방송통신위원회가 JTBC, TV조선, 채널A, MBN 등 4개 방송국에 종합편성 프로그램 방송을 허가했다. 오늘 이전까지는 KBS, MBC, SBS 등 3개 지상파 방송국에게만 TV프로그램 종합편성권이 주어졌었다.
“The addition of these new channels doesn’t mean that we’re just going to have more cable channels,” said culture critic Ha Jae-keun. “The new channels will have to compete with existing networks, which have A-list actors, top-notch staff and quality content. That means the new channels will have to differentiate themselves with new programs and formats. After all, viewers are able to watch the best content right now.”

문화평론가 하재근은 “새 종편채널의 개국은 단순히 케이블채널 몇 개를 더 보게 됐다는 것만을 의미하지는 않는다. 새 종편채널들은 A급 배우와 일류 스태프, 고품질 프로그램들을 이미 갖고 있는 방송사들과 경쟁하게 된다. 이것은 새 종편채널들이 새로운 프로그램과 형식으로 스스로를 차별화시켜야 한다는 것을 의미한다. 결국 시청자들은 최고 품질의 프로그램을 볼 수 있게 된다.”고 말했다.
As Ha suggested, the entry of the new players signals a new era in Korean television, following the Korea Communications Commission’s announcement of the four new broadcasters last December.
이 문화평론가가 말했듯이 지난해 12월 방송통신위원회가 발표한 4개 종편채널의 시장진입은 한국 TV산업에 새로운 시대를 열게 될 것이다.
JTBC, launched by the JoongAng Ilbo, has already attracted a star-studded lineup of influential producers and top actors and actresses, many of whom have established long-standing careers in film and television.
