Has Lee Byung-chul found the answer?

“How can the existence of God be proven?” “If God loves humans, why does he allow pain, misery and death?” “What is religion, and why do people need belief?” “There are so many churches and believers in Korea, but why are there so many crimes?” “Is the end of the world approaching?”

Late Samsung Group founder Lee Byung-chul had asked 24 questions to a Catholic priest in October 1987, a month before he died of lung cancer. The five-page inquiry is filled with intrinsic questions about life and death, god, science, and religion. On Dec. 17, the JoongAng Ilbo featured the questions along with the responses by Father Cha Dong-yeop, a professor at Incheon Catholic University, after 24 years.

Many readers read the questions and answers thoroughly. Even the wealthiest man in Korea was a vulnerable human being in the end and contemplated existential and fundamental matters before death. The questions posed by Lee represent the ontological anguish that all of us may experience at some point in our lives.

Contemplation and reflection about the primary natural order of humans and the universe always boil down to the matter of God and religion. The questions raised by Lee can be asked by any one of us, but no one has the right answers. Cha has merely offered one set of answers.

Cha said that religion and science are not pitted against each other. In 1916, 40 percent of American scientists responded that they believed in the existence of God. The result remained the same in a similar survey conducted 81 years later in 1997.

In the meantime, modern science and technology have made great progress. Cha answered the questions, “What does it mean that the percentage of the scientists who believe in God has not changed?” In responding, he cited Francis Bacon, who said, “A little science estranges a man from God. A lot of science brings him back.”

Still, many internationally renowned physicists, including Stephen Hawking, support atheism or agnosticism. The European Organization for Nuclear Research came a step closer to unlocking the secret to the birth of the universe when it made a breakthrough in possibly detecting a Higgs boson, a hypothetical massive particle known as the “God particle.”

Is the natural order of humanity and the universe an area of science or religion? Has Lee Byung-chul found an answer?

“신의 존재를 어떻게 증명할 수 있는가?” “신이 인간을 사랑했다면 왜 고통과 불행과 죽음을 주었는가?” “종교란 무엇이며 왜 인간에게 필요한가?” “우리나라는 두 집 건너 교회가 있고, 신자도 많은데 사회범죄와 시련이 왜 그리 많은가?” “지구의 종말은 오는가?”… 삼성그룹 창업주인 고(故) 이병철 회장이 폐암으로 타계하기 한 달 전인 1987년 10월, 어느 가톨릭 신부에게 던졌다는 24개 항의 질문이 눈길을 끈다. A4 용지 5장 분량의 질문서에는 삶과 죽음, 인간과 신, 과학과 종교에 관한 본질적 질문들이 녹아 있다. 지난주말 중앙일보(12월 17일자)에는 이 질문들과 함께 차동엽 신부(인천가톨릭대 교수)가 24년만에 내놓은 답변이 나란히 실렸다. 질문과 대답을 비교해 가며 꼼꼼히 읽은 독자들이 많았을 법하다. 대한민국 최고 부자도 죽음 앞에선 결국 나약한 인간으로서 실존적이고 근원적인 문제를 고민했다는 점이 가슴에 와닿는다. 이 회장의 질문들은 인간이라면 누구나 해봤음직한 존재론적 고민을 대변한다. 인간과 우주의 근원적 섭리에 관한 성찰과 고민은 신과 종교의 문제로 귀결되기 마련이다. 이 회장이 제기한 질문은 인간이기 때문에 할 수 있는 질문이지만 누구도 정답을 제시할 수 없는 문제들이다. 그맇다면 차 신부는 성직자로서 할 수 있는 답변의 한 가지 사례를 제시한 것으로 봐야 한다. 차 신부는 과학과 종교는 대립적 관계가 아니라고 말한다. 1916년 미 과학자의 40%가 ‘신의 존재를 믿는다’고 대답했는데, 81년이 지난 97년 조사에서도 같은 결과가 나왔다고 한다. 그 사이 현대과학은 비약적으로 발전했다. 그럼에도 신의 존재를 믿는 과학자의 비율에 변화가 없다는 것은 무엇을 뜻하는가. 차 신부는 이렇게 반문하면서, “약간의 과학은 사람을 신으로부터 멀어지게 하지만 더 많은 과학은 인간을 다시 신에게 돌아가게 한다”는 프랜시스 베이컨의 말을 인용했다. 세계적 물리학자 중에는 스티븐 호킹 박사처럼 무신론이나 불가지(不可知)론을 지지하는 학자들도 여전히 많다. 유럽입자물리학연구소(CERN)의 빅뱅 재현 실험에 참가 중인 과학자들이 ‘신의 입자’로 알려진 힉스 입자 발견에 근접함으로써 우주 탄생의 비밀에 한층 다가서게 됐단다. 인간과 우주의 섭리는 과학의 영역인가 신의 영역인가. 이 회장은 이제 그 답을 찾았을까. 배명복 논설위원
