요즘 서울역 건너편에서는 5층 건물 리모델링 공사를 놓고 주민과 서울시가 팽팽히 맞서 있다. 서울시는 지난 10월 이 건물을 임대해 ‘노숙인 자유카페’를 만들기로 했다.

서울에는 이미 노숙인 쉼터 39곳과 생활보호센터·상담소들이 있다. 쉼터는 생활수칙을 귀찮아하는 노숙인들 때문에 자리가 남아돈다. 쪽방·응급구호방도 노숙인 시설이다. 서울역파출소 앞 지하보도 한 곳을 막아 80명이 잘 수 있는 공간도 새로 마련했다. 잠자리가 따뜻하도록 전기패널을 깐 이 공간은 내일 정식으로 문을 연다. 여성 노숙인 한두 명을 위해 작은 방을 따로 만들었다. 서울시는 노숙인들이 쉴 수 있는 컨테이너 12개도 준비하고 있다. 서울역 건물과 어울리게 겉을 ‘예술작품’처럼 꾸며서 23일 배치할 예정이다.

A section of the underground path in front of ⓐthe Seoul Station police box has been turned into a shelter for 80 people with ⓑheating panel. It is to open officially ⓒon December 15, providing ⓓwarm place to sleep. Separate small rooms are offered for female homeless people. Also, the city has prepared 12 containers to offer places for the homeless to rest. The exterior of the containers will be decorated artistically to match the Seoul Station buildings and be placed on December 23.
