Homegrown beef
Employees at a Nonghyup plant work on hanwoo, or high-end Korean beef, yesterday before it is delivered to the military and other mass consumers. The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries plans to replace imported beef that is supplied to the military with hanwoo as part of its plan to stabilize beef prices. Hanwoo prices have dropped more than 30 percent to 4.4 million won ($3,800) per 600 kilograms from 6.35 million won two years ago. At many high-street retailers, the traditionally expensive hanwoo is now closer in price to cheaper pork products. [YONHAP]
