Seoul’s English teachers shocked at getting axe

When Margaret Morris lost her job as a teacher at a high school in Tennessee due to budget cuts, a friend teaching in Seoul told her to hop on a plane.

테네시주의 한 고등학교에서 교사로 일하던 마가렛 모리스는 예산 삭감으로 일자리를 잃었을 때, 서울에서 원어민 영어 교사로 일하던 친구로부터 서울행 비행기를 타라고 권유 받았다.
“I heard wonderful things about Korea,” Morris said, “and also heard the Korean government was continuing to hire more foreign teachers to teach English. I thought that sounded terrific.” Morris arrived last August and ended up teaching at an all-girls high school in Suyu, Gangbuk District, northern Seoul.

모리스는 “한국에 대해 좋은 얘기들을 들었어요. 그리고 한국 정부가 영어교육을 위해 더 많은 외국인 교사들을 고용하고 있다는 얘기도 들었어요. 아주 멋진 일이라고 생각했어요.”라고 말했다. 모리스는 지난해 8월에 서울에 도착해 서울 강북구 수유동의 한 여자고등학교에서 영어를 가르치고 있다.
But when her one-year contract with the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education expires next August, Morris will once again be out of a job because of budget cuts.

그러나 서울시교육청과의 1년 고용계약이 만료되는 올 8월이면 모리스는 예산 삭감 때문에 또 일자리를 잃게 된다.
“The school that I’m working for told me that they can place me either in an elementary or a middle school, but I’ve already started the application procedure to teach in a university,” Morris said. “I am happy to be here, and I don't want to leave.”

모리스는 “학교측은 저를 초등학교나 중학교에 배치해 줄 수 있다고 말해줬어요. 그러나 저는 대학교 강사 자리에 구직 신청을 이미 했습니다. 저는 한국에서 행복해요. 떠나고 싶지 않아요.”라고 말했다.
A total of 255 foreign English teachers currently working at high schools in Seoul will have to start looking for a new job after the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education decided to use its 4.4 billion won ($3.8 million) budget in other ways.

서울시교육청이 원어민 영어 교사 고용에 배정된 예산 440억원을 삭감하고 다른 용도로 사용하기로 결정하면서 서울지역 고등학교에 고용된 원어민 영어 교사 255명은 새 직장을 찾아 나서야 하게 됐다.
