Posco chasing global CSR programs to win friends

Posco, which has set its goal for 2012 as becoming a “beloved company,” announced it will launch corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs in Africa. The steelmaker said yesterday it completed construction of a child care center in Zimbabwe. This center will provide basic education for children suffering from AIDS and poverty. The center will also make health promotion efforts for young Africans.

Around 200 officials, including those from Posco and the Zimbabwean government, attended the completion ceremony held in the capital Harare yesterday. Posco embarked on building a training center for farmers on the same day. Meanwhile, an agricultural training center will open in Mozambique tomorrow. As the company plans to accelerate its development of resources in Africa, it said it will increase CSR efforts in the poverty-stricken continent. “We plan to create an environment where local African people can stand on their own feet by acquiring some technical skills,” the company said.
