GNP in full panic after bribe claim

한나라당 고승덕 의원이 박희태 현 국회의장이 2008년 한나라당 전당대회에서 자신에게 돈봉투를 주려고 했다고 어제 확인하면서 더 많은 돈봉투가 뿌려졌을 것이라는 의혹이 확산되고 있다.
Koh, a 55-year-old first-term lawmaker representing Seocho B District of Seoul, held a press conference yesterday afternoon to confirm some details about his revelation about the GNP leadership election. Koh said that Park appeared to have tried to buy votes of other GNP lawmakers to become chairman, instantly driving the ruling party into a panic.

서울 서초을 지역구에서 초선인 고 의원(55)은 한나라 전당대회 돈봉투 사건에 관한 자신의 폭로를 더 구체적으로 밝히기 위해 어제 오후 기자회견을 열었다. 고 의원이 박희태 현 국회의장이 당시에 당대표가 되려고 다른 한나라당 의원들의 지지표를 돈으로 매수하려고 한 것 같다고 말해 한나라당을 즉시 공황상태에 빠뜨렸다.
It appeared inevitable that the prosecution would question the incumbent National Assembly speaker. Koh first revealed the bribery attempt in a newspaper column on Dec. 14. While the claim did not generate much reaction at the time, the issue was revisited by a cable TV network on Jan. 3, right in the middle of the ruling partys efforts to reform itself to stop its plummeting popularity ahead of the April legislative election.

검찰이 현직 국회의장을 조사하는 것이 불가피해진 것 같다. 고 의원은 12월14일 신문 칼럼에서 돈봉투 사건을 처음으로 폭로했었다. 이 칼럼은 당시엔 별로 반향을 불러일으키지 못했다. 한나라당이 4월 총선을 앞두고 곤두박질치고 있는 인기를 회복하기 위해 한창 쇄신작업을 하고 있을 무렵인 1월3일에 한 케이블 TV가 돈봉투 사건 폭로를 재조명했다.
In the press conference yesterday, Koh identified Park, who headed the GNP from July 2008 to September 2009, as the person who attempted to buy his vote before the leadership election in 2008 with an envelope stuffed with 3 million won ($2,600) in cash.

어제 기자회견에서 고 의원은 2008년 전당대회 때 현금 3백만원이 들어있는 봉투로 자신의 표를 사려고 했던 사람은 2008년 7월부터 2009년 9월까지 한나라당 대표를 역임한 박희태 현 국회의장이라고 밝혔다.
"I have told the prosecution everything I know," Koh said at the press conference. "It was about the envelope full of money from the July 3, 2008, leadership election. I gave details and the testimony to the prosecutors in such detail that it reached 67 pages."

"제가 알고 있는 모든 것을 검찰에 말했습니다." 고 의원은 기자회견에서 말했다. "제가 말한 것은 2008년 7월3일 전당대회에서 돈이 들어있는 봉투에 관한 것이었습니다. 상세하게 검찰에 증언했는데 증언내용이 67쪽에 이르렀습니다."
