유대인과 한국인 … 교육열은 같은데 결과가 다른 까닭 … 삼성이 고리 끊어주길
유대인들은 13세가 되면 ‘바르미츠바(Bar Mitzvah)’라는 성인식을 치른다. 부모들이 이를 위해 미리 자금을 저축해둘 만큼 유대인들에게는 중요한 의식이다. 부모뿐 아니라 많은 친척과 친지가 하객으로 참석해 축하해 준다.이날 부모와 하객들은 성경책과 손목시계, 축의금을 선물한다. 성경은 종교적으로 신실한 인간이 되라는 의미고, 시계는 시간의 소중함을 가슴에 새기라는 뜻이다. 실질적으로 중요한 의미를 갖는 건 축의금인데 그 중요성만큼 규모가 상당하다고 한다. 중산층의 경우 쉽게 5000만원을 넘긴다.
이 돈은 고스란히 은행에 들어갔다가 자녀가 학업을 마치고 독립할 때 햇볕을 본다. 그때는 이미 배 가까이 불어난 상태가 된다. 부모 품을 떠나는 명목상 독립뿐 아니라 경제적으로 완벽한 홀로서기를 가능케 해주는 종잣돈이 되는 것이다.
바르미츠바에는 또 하나의 행사가 있다. 사전에 주어진 문제의 해답을 주인공이 하객들 앞에서 발표하게 하는 것이다. 아인슈타인이 바르미츠바 때 받았던 질문은 이랬단다. “아무도 없는 숲 속에서 커다란 나무가 쓰러졌다. 소리가 나겠는가 안 나겠는가?” 아무도 듣지 못하는 소리가 과연 소리인가 하는 철학적 질문이다. 성인으로 인증받으려면 독창적 대답을 내놔야 한다. 유대인들의 놀라운 생존력과 창의력이 이런 시스템에서 나온다.
교육열로는 유대인에 결코 뒤지지 않는 한국인들은 어떤가. 노후자금과 뒤바꾼 사교육비로 자녀 교육에 올인하지만 창의성 교육은 생각할 틈도 없다. 대신 논술학원에 보낸다. 그렇게 판에 박힌 사고력을 갖게 된 자녀들의 경제적 독립은 꿈같은 얘기다. 온갖 인맥을 동원해 취직도 시켜줘야 하고, 결혼까지 책임져야 한다. 아직 멀었다. 그 다음엔 손자손녀까지 봐줘야 한다.
엄청난 교육투자에 비해 한국인들의 경쟁력이 상대적으로 취약한 이유가 다른 데 있지 않다. 그렇다고 이 책임을 부모들이 몽땅 뒤집어쓰기란 억울한 일이다. 많은 부분이 기업 몫이다. 창의성 대신 스펙을 따지는 까닭이다. 기업이 그러니 대학들은 취업학원이 되고, 부모들은 취업 잘되는 대학에 보내려 더 많은 스펙을 만들어 주느라 여념이 없다. 그렇게 취업한 사람들끼리 학벌 따지고 학연 만드니 악순환의 고리가 끊기지 않는다.
삼성이 올해 공채부터 고졸 출신 사무•개발직을 뽑기로 한 결정은 그래서 의미 있는 일이다. 초우량 글로벌 기업으로서 자신감의 발로다. 아직 적은 수지만 처음부터 창대할 수는 없는 노릇이다. 사회공헌 차원에서만의 결정은 아니라 믿는다. 만약 그렇다면 삼성이나 고졸 취업자 모두에게 불행한 일인 까닭이다. 소모적 스펙 쌓기에 낭비할 열정을 고스란히 담아 창의적 에너지로 뽑아낼 저수조를 만들 수 없으니 말이다.

The money goes straight into the bank account, only to be withdrawn when the boy or the girl grows up, finishes education and becomes independent. By that time, the money would nearly double. It would become enough money that grants full economic independence, not just nominal separation from the parents, possible.
