Girl gets record 7-organ transplant
A six-year-old girl, Cho Eun-seo, has a dream of one day being able to eat a hamburger. Although it might seem to be a small wish, for Cho, who was born with chronic intestinal ileus, commonly known as bowel obstruction, eating a hamburger would mean a lot to her.

6살 소녀 최은서는 햄버거를 먹을 수 있는 날이 오기를 꿈꾼다. 비록 작은 소원으로 들리지만, 흔히 장운동 장애로 알려져 있는 선천성 만성 장폐색을 앓고 있는 은서에게는 햄버거를 먹는 게 굉장한 일이다.
Now, Cho's dream is likely to come true as Seoul's Asan Medical Center announced yesterday that its team of medical doctors, led by Kim Dae-yeon, an associate professor at the Department of Pediatric Surgery, successfully transplanted seven organs at the same time, which is unprecedented in Korea, to Cho in October of last year.

서울아산병원은 소아외과 김대연 교수가 이끄는 의료진이 지난해 10월 7개의 장기를 동시에 성공적으로 이식했다고 어제 발표함에 따라 이제 은서의 꿈이 곧 이뤄질 것 같다. 7개 장기 동시이식은 한국에서는 전례가 없다.
As the disease is a partial or complete blockage of the bowel that results in the failure of the food to pass through, Cho hardly had any digestive functions and did not have the ability to absorb nutrients.

장폐색증은 장이 일부 또는 전혀 운동을 하지 않아 음식물을 소화기관으로 옮기지 못하는 병이기 때문에 은서는 소화기능을 거의 갖지 못했고 영양분을 흡수할 능력이 없다.
According to the Seoul Asan Medical Center, it transplanted seven vital organs inside the abdomen, including the liver, pancreas, small intestine, stomach, duodenum, large intestine, and spleen, to Cho on Oct. 12, which were from a brain-dead patient who was around Cho's age. "I am so happy that I can now eat food without throwing up," said Cho, as she took a bite of her breakfast yesterday.

서울아산병원에 따르면, 뇌사한 은서 또래 여자아이에게서 적출한 간, 췌장, 소장, 위, 십이지장, 대장, 비장 등 복부내 7개 장기를 10월12일 은서에게 이식했다. 어제 아침 식사로 음식을 한 입 먹으면서 은서는 "이제 토하지 않고 음식을 먹을 수 있어서 행복해요."라고 말했다.
Cho's mother Kim Young-ah, 32, said, "Before the surgery, she could only eat one spoonful of rice, but now, she can eat two to three. It's like a dream for me to see her eating," and added, "She has reached the age to enter an elementary school this year, but we'll practice eating more and more for the meantime and try to enter school next year."

은서의 엄마 김영아(32)씨는 "수술 전에는 은서는 겨우 밥 한 숟가락만 먹을 수 있었어요. 그런데 이제 은서는 두세 숟가락 먹을 수 있어요. 은서가 밥을 먹는 걸 보는 게 제겐 꿈만 같아요."라고 말했다. 그녀는 "은서는 올해 초등학교 입학할 나이가 됐지만, 당분간 먹는 훈련을 더 한 뒤에 내년에 입학할 거에요."라고 덧붙였다.
The surgery went on for nine hours. According to the hospital, six of the organs were not transplanted one by one but all together. Only the liver, which is more complicated to transplant, was done separately.
수술은 9시간이 걸렸다. 병원측에 따르면, 6개 장기들을 하나씩 이식한 게 아니라 통째로 한꺼번에 이식했다. 이식하기가 좀 더 복잡한 간은 따로 이식수술을 했다.
