달인의 경지는 인고의 1만 시간 견뎌낸 대가 아닐까

요네하라 마리(米原万里)는 문필가로 이름을 날린 일본 여성이다. 불치병에 걸려 쉰다섯을 일기로 세상을 떠났다. 원래 그는 러시아어 전문 통역사였다. 러시아어 통역에 관한 한 일본에서 그를 따라갈 사람이 없었다. 죽기 몇 달 전인 2006년 1월, 그는 ‘슈칸분슌(週刊文春)’에 이런 글을 쓴 적이 있다.

 한창 통역사로 뛰던 시절, “그 정도 통역을 하려면 어느 정도의 어학 실력을 갖춰야 합니까”란 질문을 종종 받았다고 한다. 그때마다 그는 “그 나라의 소설을 즐길 수 있을 정도면 되지 않을까요”라고 대답했다는 것이다. 그야말로 우문(愚問)에 현답(賢答)이다. 외국어로 된 소설을 능숙하게 읽고, 즐길 수 있다는 것은 단순히 어학 실력만 갖고 되는 일이 아니다. 그 나라의 문화와 역사, 풍속과 지리, 시사까지 두루 통달해야 가능하다. 그 나라 소설을 제대로 즐길 수 있다는 것은 사실상 반쯤은 그 나라 사람이 됐다는 뜻이다. 한두 해 반짝 노력해서 될 일이 아니란 얘기다.

 즐겨 보는 TV 프로그램 중에 ‘생활의 달인’이란 코너가 있다. 특정 분야나 직업에서 달인의 경지에 이른 평범한 사람들을 소개하는 다큐멘터리 프로그램이다. 남이 안 알아주더라도 자신의 일을 천직으로 삼아 거의 평생을 한 가지 일에 전념해 온 사람들이 주인공이다. 열심히 사는 그들을 볼 때마다 존경심과 함께 그동안 나는 뭐했나 싶은 자괴감이 든다. 그동안 그들이 겪었을 간난신고(艱難辛苦)를 생각하면 숙연해지기까지 한다.

 미국의 신경과학자로 캐나다 맥길대 교수인 대니얼 레비틴 박사에 따르면 특정 분야에서 최고 수준의 전문가가 되려면 최소한 1만 시간은 그 분야에 쏟아부어야 한다고 한다. 하루 세 시간을 투자한다고 가정하면 하루도 빼지 않고 10년 동안 지속적으로 노력해야 한다는 계산이다. 그의 말대로 하자면 지금쯤 나는 펜만 잡으면 뭐든지 일필휘지(一筆揮之)할 수 있어야 하지만 전혀 그렇질 못하다. 모니터 앞에만 앉으면 오금이 저려오고 갈수록 글 쓰는 게 힘들어지니 무슨 조화인지 모르겠다. 같은 1만 시간이라도 얼마나 열과 성을 다해 몰입했느냐가 중요하다고 할 수밖에 없다. 김연아가 빙판 위에서 아름답고, ‘나가수’ 무대에 선 가수들이 아름다운 것은 고통과 인내의 1만 시간을 견뎌냈기 때문이다
가수 조영남이 예술의전당 오페라극장 무대에 선다고 한다. 음대에 입학한 지 50년 만에 처음 서는 오페라 무대다. 달인의 경지에 이른 사람에게 주어지는 영광의 선물이다. 갈수록 세상 사는 것이 힘들다고 아우성이다. 그렇다고 세상 탓만 하고 있을 순 없다. 당장은 표가 나지 않더라도 꾸준히 노력한다면 언젠가는 빛을 볼 날이 오지 않을까. 새해 결심 작심삼일(作心三日)이라고 포기할 게 아니다. 도전하고 매진하는 사람이 현명한 사람이다.
