Korea brings home four golds in short track

SHANGHAI - Kwak Yoon-gy finished first in the 1,000- and 3,000-meter races yesterday as Korea won four gold medals at the three-day world short track speedskating championships.

Kwak won the men’s 1,000 final in a time of 1 minute, 27.772 seconds. His teammate, Noh Jin-kyu, who finished ahead of Kwak to win the 1,500 meters on Friday, had a second-place time of 1:34.463, followed by Canada’s Charles Hamelin with 1:55.181.

Kwak then came back less than an hour later to win the 3,000, again beating teammate Noh, with another Korean, Sin Da-woon, in third.

In the women’s 1,000, Cho Ha-ri finished first with a time of 1:31.283 Sunday. Li Jianrou of China, who won gold in Friday’s 1,500 meters, was second with 1:31.325, followed by Valerie Maltais of Canada at 1:31.350.

Canada won gold in the men’s 5,000-meter relay, with the Netherlands and Korea taking second and third, respectively. China won the women’s 3,000 relay ahead of the United States and Korea.

After Korea’s four wins, Canada and China had three gold medals each. AP
