Airports to up security as nuclear forum nears

Ahead of the Nuclear Security Summit later this month, the government announced plans yesterday to intensify security measures at the country’s major airports starting Monday.

According to the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, the security level at four key airports in Incheon, Gimpo, Gimhae, and Cheongju will be raised to “orange” from Monday to Thursday, up from the current “yellow” level.

During the March 23-27 period, the levels will be raised further to the highest level, “red.” The security level for Incheon International Airport, in the meantime, will remain under the “red” alert until March 28.

In general, the country’s airport security system is divided into five levels from “green” in normal circumstances to “red” in conditions perceived as a serious threat to safety.

In between are “blue,” “yellow” and “orange.” The remaining 11 airports located in regional areas will be under the “yellow” security level from Monday to March 27.

“We are beefing up efforts to heighten safety standards at all airports and their facilities by redoubling screenings of all passengers, baggage and cargo to prevent terrorist activities,” the ministry said in a statement. “With the intensified security measures, we advise international passengers to arrive at their respective airports three hours before their flights.”

The Incheon International Airport Corporation said that it “will place more inspection and information personnel to minimize passenger inconvenience.”

In addition, during the two-day summit period, boarding and check-in services offered at the Korea City Air Terminal located near COEX, the venue of the summit in Samseong-dong, southern Seoul, will be temporarily suspended.
