Under the circumstances, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has come up with concrete policies to educate these children, as they are valuable assets./ 이런 상황에서 교육과학기술부가 이 아이들을 가치 있는 재산으로서 교육하겠다는 견실한 정책을 내 놓았다/ The government’s previous policies on mixed-race children regarded them as an “alienated class” and were aimed at providing them with aid./ 정부의 이전의 정책이 다문화 아이들을 “소외된 계층”으로 여기고 그들에게 혜택을 베푸는 것에 목적을 두었다/ But a recent shift in policy could mark the beginning of a significant change in the government’s approach, as it has opened the way to embrace them for their ultimate contributions to our society./ 그러나 최근의 정책적 변화는 그들이 궁극적으로 사회에 기여할 수 있도록 포용하는 길을 열었다는 측면에서 정부의 접근법에 상당한 변화가 시작되었다고 할 수 있다/
We welcome the government’s latest decision to set up “preliminary” schools across the nation so that these children can adapt to their new surroundings for six months before enrolling in regular schools./ 이러한 아이들이 정규학교에 들어가지 전 6개월 동안 새로운 환경에 적응할 수 있도록 전국적으로 “예비”학교를 설치하기로 한 최근의 정부의 결정을 우리는 환영한다/ Many of these children had to be placed at regular schools close to their homes as soon as they entered the country, and have subsequently experienced great difficulty adjusting to their new school environments./ 이러한 많은 아이들은 입국하자마자 집 인근의 정규 학교에 배치해야만 했고 그러다 보니 새로운 학교 환경에 적응하는데 상당한 어려움을 겪을 수밖에 없었다/
Therefore, the government will also establish Korean language courses for them at elementary, middle and high schools around the country and assign mentors to each one of them to accelerate their assimilation process in an effort to substantially promote their academic performance./ 따라서, 정부는 전국의 초 중 고등학교의 다문화 학생을 위해 한국어 교육과정을 설치하고 학교 성적을 올리기 위한 노력의 일환으로 적응을 돕기 위해 멘토를 붙여 줄 계획이다/
In addition, the government took a groundbreaking step in enabling mixed-race students to learn their mother tongue at their schools during after-school hours, on weekends or on vacation./ 게다가 정부는 방과후 학교, 주말, 방학 동안에 학교에서 자신들의 모국어를 다문화 학생들이 배울 수 있도록 하는 획기적인 조치를 취했다/ The government’s efforts are desirable as they may not only induce parents to participate in their children’s education but also enhance their pride as multicultural families./ 정부의 노력은 아이들의 교육에 부모들이 참여할 수 있도록 유도할 뿐만 아니라 다문화 가정으로서의 그들의 자긍심을 높여주었다는 점에서 바람직하다/
But policies alone are not enough./ 그러나 정책만으로는 부족하다/ Korean teachers and students must put these policies into action by accepting mixed-race children as their precious pupils and peers./ 한국인 교사와 학생들은 다문화 아이들을 그들의 소중한 제자와 동료로서 받아들임으로써 이러한 정책을 실행으로 옮겨야 한다/ Our school community must go way beyond simply accepting differences in skin color./ 우리 학교 공동체는 피부색의 다름을 단지 받아들이는 것을 넘어서야 한다/ Education should focus on guiding our kids to accumulate diverse experiences so they will respect the value of diversity through mixed-race students./ 교육은 다양한 경험을 축적할 수 있도록 아이들을 지도하는데 초점을 맞추어 그들이 다문화 학생을 통해 다양성의 가치를 존중하도록 해야 한다/ Only when our kids overcome differences can they weather the challenging global era./ 우리 아이들이 다름을 넘어서야 글로벌 시대를 헤쳐 나갈 수 있다./
