Presidents celebrate the FTA
The Korea International Trade Association hosts a celebration luncheon for the implementation of the Korea-U.S. FTA yesterday at the Grand Intercontinental Hotel in southern Seoul, inviting incumbent and former officials from both countries who were involved in the negotiations. The presidents of Korea and the United States yesterday reaffirmed their commitment to the free trade agreement between the two countries and agreed to use the accord as a stepping stone to overcome economic crises and boost growth.

한미 양국 대통령은 어제 한미 FTA(자유무역협정) 실행 약속을 재확인하고 경제위기 극복과 경제성장에 FTA를 발판으로 활용하겠다는 점에 의견이 일치했다.
Starting yesterday, the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement came into effect, immediately removing tariffs on 82.1 percent of goods imported from the United States and 80.5 percent of the products that Korea exports to the United States.

한미FTA는 어제부터 발효돼 미국산 수입품 82.1%와 한국산 대미 수출품 80.5%에 관세가 즉시 없어졌다.
According to the Blue House, President Lee Myung-bak and U.S. President Barack Obama had a roughly 10-minute telephone conversation at 6:30 a.m. yesterday to mark the implementation of the trade accord.

청와대에 따르면, 이명박 한국 대통령과 버락 오바마 미국 대통령은 어제 오전 6시30분쯤 FTA발효를 기념하며 10분 가량 전화통화를 했다.
During the conversation, the two leaders agreed that the bilateral deal will serve as an exemplary model for global free trade.

전화통화에서 양국 대통령은 한미FTA가 세계 자유무역 촉진을 위한 모범적인 모델이 될 것이라는 기대에 동의했다.
"I have high expectations that the implementation of the Korea-U.S. FTA will contribute to the two countries' economic development and strengthen our bilateral relationship," Lee told Obama, praising the U.S. president's efforts, the Blue House said.

이명박 대통령이 오바마 대통령의 노력을 칭송하며 "한미FTA 발효가 양국의 경제발전과 한미관계 강화에 크게 기여할 것이라고 기대한다"고 오바마 대통령에게 말했다고 청와대가 밝혔다.
"The FTA will be a great model for international free trade, and I expect to see a successful outcome. It is a good sign not only for the United States, but for the world economy that the American economy is gradually recovering and jobs are increasing."
"한미FTA는 국제 자유무역을 위해 훌륭한 모델이 될 것이며, 성공적인 결과를 기대한다. 미국 경제가 점진적으로 회복하고 있고 일자리가 늘어나는 것은 미국 뿐만 아니라 세계경제를 위해서도 좋은 조짐이다."
