A loyal reader sent a letter to the Korea JoongAng Daily the old-fashioned way - printed on a stiff piece of office stationary - and my dilemma was getting it into the system for editing. With this application, the dilemma was solved. I took a picture of the letter with my iPhone, inputted my own e-mail address, and 30 seconds later, received an e-mail with the letter reproduced in editable ASCII characters. I didn’t even need to walk across the newsroom and ask someone to scan it.
Optical character recognition technology has come a long way. Even in imperfect lighting conditions, and from a document with folds and creases, the software made few errors in the conversion. The processing is done on servers out in the cloud, not on your own device. Snoopy reporters should find this app invaluable for surreptitiously capturing documents left lying around on sources’ desks.
