“높은 곳이 무섭다면 스카이 다이빙을 배워라”…‘천재 소녀’ 레베카 황의 조언
임정욱씨는 국내에서 가장 많은 팔로어(5만3700여 명)를 둔 IT업계 인사다. 최근까지 글로벌 검색업체 라이코스 대표로 일했다. 얼마 전 그를 통해 “한국 벤처의 미국 실리콘밸리 진출을 돕는 아르헨티나 교포 출신 여성이 있다”는 소식을 접했다. 레베카 황(32), 별명이 ‘천재 소녀’라고 했다. 호기심이 일었다.해외 뉴스 검색을 해보니 이미 실리콘밸리에선 유명인사였다. 그가 공동 창업한 유누들은 유망 벤처기업과 인재를 연결하고 벤처 지원•육성 프로그램을 운영하는 회사다. 중소기업청과 함께 한국 창업희망자들에 대한 현지 연수도 진행 중이다. 마침 6일에는 그가 다보스포럼의 ‘2012년 젊은 글로벌 리더’에 선정됐다는 뉴스가 나왔다. 그와 e-메일을 주고받았다. 명문대 출신 교포 자녀의 성공기는 낯선 주제가 아니다. 날 끌어당긴 건 눈부신 성취 이면에 있는 그의 가치관과 당찬 도전정신이었다.
레베카는 6세 때 가족과 함께 부에노스아이레스로 이민을 갔다. 경제도 사회도 불안했다. 그는 “오후가 되면 물건 값이 오전의 두 배, 세 배가 되는 일이 흔했다”고 회상했다. 교육 환경 또한 열악했다. 그는 열두 살 여름방학 때 혼자 영어의 기본을 뗐다. 1년 과정의 카세트 테이프 교재를 물리도록 들었다. 15세 때 ‘마리 퀴리처럼 세계에 영향을 끼치는 과학자’가 되기로 결심했다. 1998년 미국 MIT에 등록금 전액을 면제받으며 합격했다. 아버지가 우는 모습을 그때 처음 봤다고 한다.
MIT에서 화학 전공으로 학•석사 학위를 받았다. 물론 생활비는 직접 벌었다. 개발도상국의 상수도 문제 해결에 골몰했다. 직접 인도로, 니카라과로 날아가 현장에서 부대끼고 정부 관계자를 만났다. 물 문제를 풀려면 정치•경제를 아우르는 총체적 해법이 필요함을 깨달았다. 그가 스탠퍼드대 박사과정 중 벤처업계에 뛰어든 이유다. 그는 “기업가정신을 통한 경제 발전과 일자리 창출이야말로 더 나은 세상을 위한 동력”이라고 강조했다. 레베카는 자기 인생의 2대 지침을 말해줬다. 첫째, 내일을 위해 오늘을 희생하지 않는다. 둘째, 두려움은 바로 그 두려움을 뛰어넘는 것으로 이긴다. 스카이 다이빙을 시작한 것도 높은 곳을 무서워했기 때문이란다.
메일을 주고받으며 그는 천재 소녀라기보다 열정 소녀라는 생각을 했다. 그가 한 삶의 각 선택엔 분명한 이유가 있었다. 꿈을 위해 모험을 마다하지 않았다. 그 과정에서 약점은 강점으로, 실패는 성공의 디딤돌로 삼았다. 공부도 취직도 등 떠밀려 하기 일쑤인 우리 몇몇 젊은이들의 모습과 오버랩됐다. 모두 그처럼 MIT•스탠퍼드에 진학할 순 없는 일이다. 하지만 자신이 하는 일과 공부의 진정한 목적을 곱씹어볼 수는 있지 않을까. 돈도 명예도 아닌 가치(價値)가 이끄는 삶. 내가 레베카에게 배운 것이다.
