In speech at HUFS, U.S. president says ‘No rewards for provocations’

Amid heightened security ahead of the Nuclear Security Summit which runs until today, United States President Barack Obama spoke to Korean students yesterday morning on a Seoul campus, the first incumbent U.S. president to do so.

In his third visit to the South Korean capital, Obama addressed some 700 students of the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS), several hundreds of its faculty and press in the school’s Minerva Complex auditorium in Imun-dong, Dongdaemun District, northern Seoul.

He spoke of South Korea’s role in the global community, calling Korea “one of the world’s most dynamic economies,” and the “urgent work of preventing nuclear terrorism by securing the world’s nuclear materials” that needed to be addressed at the summit.

The U.S. president opened by acknowledging that it was the two-year anniversary of the Cheonan sinking, then stated his broader comprehensive nuclear disarmament agenda and issued a warning against countries who continue to challenge international security.

오바마 대통령은 천안함 폭침 2주년을 언급하면서 연설을 시작했고, 포괄적인 핵무기 군축 의제를 거론했으며 이어서 국제안보를 계속 위협하는 국가들에게 경고 메시지를 보냈다.
Obama warned North Korea that “there will be no rewards for provocations” regarding its pursuit of nuclear weapons. “I want to speak directly to the leaders in Pyongyang,” he said. “The U.S. has no hostile intent to your country ... but by now, it should be clear your provocations and pursuit of nuclear weapons have not achieved the security you seek.”

오바마 대통령은 북한에게 “도발에는 보상이 없을 것”이라며 북한의 핵무기 개발에 대해 경고했다. “북한 지도자들에게 직접 말한다. 미국은 당신들의 국가에 전혀 적대적인 의도를 갖고 있지 않다… 당신들의 도발과 핵무기 개발로는 당신들이 추구했던 안보를 성취하지 못했다는 게 지금쯤은 분명해졌을 것이다.”
