KGC rallies to claim 3rd championship title

Daejeon Korea Ginseng Corporation became the women’s V-League champion after beating Suwon Hyundai E&C Hillstate yesterday.

At Chungmu Gymnasium in Daejeon, the regular season title holder KGC defeated No. 3 seed and defending champion Hillstate 3-1 (16-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-18) and won its third championship title.

The women’s volleyball team had previously lifted the championship trophy in the 2005 and 2009-10 seasons.

With a 2-2 tie in the best-of-five series, the two teams put in their best efforts to clinch the title in Game 5, but it was the KGC that prevailed in the end, thanks to a performance by Madelaynne Montano, who achieved a match-high 40 points yesterday.

The 29-year-old Colombian player, the league’s best attacker after amassing 1,076 points with an attacking success rate of 50.69 percent in the regular season and an average of 33.2 points in the four final matches, was named the most valuable player of the series.

Hillstate, which has reached the finals for three consecutive seasons, fought back with its attacking trio of Brankica Mihajlovic (24 points), Yang Hyo-jin (16 points) and Hwang Yeon-ju (12 points), but failed to retain its title. By Joo Kyung-don
