Deciding our future

Tomorrow is the day to choose 300 lawmakers for the 19th National Assembly./ 내일은 19대 국회를 위한 300명의 국회의원을 뽑는 날이다/ It is not only a precious moment for the people to exercise their rights every four years but also a golden opportunity to decide the future of our country for the next four years./ 매 4년 마다 국민의 권리를 행사하는 소중한 순간이기도 하지만 향후 4년 동안의 국가의 미래를 결정하는 소중한 날이기도 하다/ Although elections - the flower of democracy - are always important, this one is particularly important./ 비록 민주주의의 꽃인 선거가 항상 중요하기는 하지만 이번 선거는 특히 중요하다/

The general election happens at a time when we are at a crossroads in terms of our internal and external environments./ 우리가 대내외적인 환경이라는 관점에서 기로에 서 있을 때 한 번씩 총선을 치르게 된다/ From the perspective of the domestic situation, the election is being held amid a drastic transformation of our political terrain./ 국내 상황의 관점에서 보면 선거는 우리의 정치적 지형의 급격한 변화 중에 치러진다고 볼 수 있다/ As people’s antagonism toward neoliberal economic values and political conservatism deepened during the last four years,/ 지난 4년간 경제적 신자유주의의 가치와 정치적 보수주의에 대한 국민의 적의가 심화되면서/ the overall political scene has taken a liberal turn amid the deepening polarization of wealth/ 전체적인 정치판은 부의 양극화로 인해 진보 쪽으로 기울었다/ - to the extent that the ruling Saenuri Party, a traditional advocate for rightist policies, came forward with liberal economic policies./ 우익 정책을 위한 전통적인 지지자인 여당인 새누리당까지 자유경제정책을 지지할 정도다/ Meanwhile, the main opposition Democratic United Party accommodated most of the far-left policies pursued by progressive parties in the past./ 한편, 통합 민주당은 과거 진보적인 정당들이 추구했던 극좌파 정책의 대다수를 수용했다/ Political pundits forecast that the Unified Progressive Party, a minor opposition party led by pro-North Korea forces, will probably become a parliamentary negotiating entity after this election./ 정치 전문가들은 친북세력이 이끌던 소수 야당인 통합 진보당이 아마도 이번 선거 후 원내교섭단체를 구성할 수도 있을 것이라고 예측하고 있다/

Therefore, we are at a crossroads./ 따라서, 우리는 기로에 서 있다/ Moreover, the results of the legislative election will directly link to the presidential election in December./ 게다가, 국회의원 선거 결과가 12월에 있을 대통령 선거와 직결될 것이다/ When the results of both elections are combined, it could mean a drastic change in what the next administration will look like./ 양대 선거의 결과를 종합해 볼 때 차기 정권의 모습은 여느 때와 비교할 수 없을 정도로 크게 달라질 수 있다/

We also must take note of our external conditions, including North Korea’s nuclear threats./ 우리는 또한 북한의 핵 위협을 포함하여 외부적인 조건들을 주목해야 한다/ Immediately after the Wednesday elections, Pyongyang will launch a Kwangmyongsong-3 rocket, a de facto long-range missile almost surely to be followed by a nuclear test./ 수요일 선거 후 즉시 북한은 광명성 3호 로켓을 발사할 것이며 사실상 장거리 미사일로 핵무기 시험으로 이어질 것이 분명하다/ Against that backdrop, the political parties in this election race demonstrate great differences in their approach to the North./ 그 배경에 대해 이번 선거에 참여한 정당들은 북한에 대한 접근 방식에 큰 차이를 나타내고 있다/

In particular, the New Progressive Party is under suspicion that its core group consists of followers of the juche (self-reliance) ideology enshrined by Kim Il Sung./ 특히 새로운 진보 정당은 핵심그룹이 김일성이 주창한 주체(자주)사상 이데올로기를 추종하는 사람들로 구성되었다는 의심을 받고 있다/ The DUP also demonstrates a leftism drastically different from the former Democratic Party through a coalition with the NPP./ DUP는 또한 NPP와의 연합을 통한 전 민주당과는 전혀 다른 좌파를 표방하고 있다/

Voters need to make a wise choice on such critical questions as: “What is a better way for our nation?” and “What party is capable of finding the right way?”/ 유권자는 “우리나라를 위한 더 나은 방법이 무엇인가?” 그리고 “어떤 정당이 올바른 길을 찾을 수 있는가?‘와 같은 중요한 물음에 대해 현명한 선택을 해야 한다/ Citizens must demonstrate their views through votes./ 국민들은 투표를 통해 자신의 견해를 표명해야 한다/ A vote is not just a vote but a chance to decide our future./ 투표는 단지 투표에 그치는 것이 아니라 우리의 미래를 결정하는 기회이다/
