Changwon named host of ISSF championship

The city of Changwon, South Gyeongsang, was named the host of the world shooting championships, the International Shooting Sport Federation announced on Tuesday.

At the ISSF general assembly in London, Changwon - some 398 kilometers (247 miles) south of Seoul - was unanimously selected as the host city for the 52nd edition of the global shooting event after Slovenia’s Maribor decided to withdraw before the official voting.

This will be the second time Korea and Asia host the event after the nation’s capital did so in 1978.

The quadrennial tournament, with 106 medals in 53 events, is scheduled to kick off in the middle of August with shooters from some 110 countries.

“Hosting the event will lift the brand of our nation and contribute to the economy,” Changwon Mayor Park Wan-su said yesterday. “Since the world is watching, we will prepare the event from now on and make Changwon a global city.”
