Mad cow case verified in California

6년 만에 처음으로 미국 캘리포니아에서 젖소 한 마리가 광우병에 걸린 것으로 확인이 되자 농림수산식품부는 미국산 수입 소고기를 어제 모두 검역하기 시작했다고 밝혔다. 이전까지는 미국산 수입 소고기의 3%를 검역했다.

농림수산식품부는 그러나 미국산 소고기 수입을 중단시키게 되는 통관을 즉각 중단하지는 않을 것이라고 말했다. 불룸버그 통신은 어제 오전 한 정부 관계자의 말을 인용하며 미국산 소고기 수입 통관을 중단할 것이라고 보도했으나, 농림수산식품부가 오후에 명확하게 입장을 밝혔다.
"We haven't taken steps to halt customs clearance of imported U.S. beef because we currently have limited information about the cattle," Yeo In-hong, a senior ministry official, said in a press briefing.

여인홍 농림수산식품부 식품산업정책실장은 기자회견에서 "현재 광우병에 걸린 소에 대해 제한된 정보만 갖고 있기 때문에 미국산 소고기 수입의 통관을 중단하는 조치를 취하지 않았다"고 말했다.
"We have requested the U.S. government to give us further details about how old the cow was, whether it was infected through feed or not, and we're awaiting their response. We will take further necessary measures after we get a response from them to prevent possible trade friction."

"광우병에 걸린 소의 월령, 사료에 의한 감염여부 등 추가로 자세한 정보를 미국정부에 요청했으며 응답을 기다리고 있다. 무역마찰을 피하기 위해 미국정부의 답변을 들은 뒤에 추가로 필요한 조치를 취할 것이다."
Yeo added it will take weeks to get the full response and that's why the government decided to inspect all U.S. beef. John Clifford, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's chief veterinarian, told reporters on Tuesday, U.S. daytime, that the infected meat never entered the food supply chain and doesn't pose any threat to consumers.

여 실장은 모든 답변을 받기까지는 수주가 걸리기 때문에 미국산 수입 소고기를 전량 검역하기로 결정했다고 덧붙였다. 존 클리포드 미국 농림부 수석 수의사는 미국 시각으로 화요일 낮에 감염된 소고기는 식품공급망에 전혀 들어가지 않았고 소비자의 건강에 어떠한 위협도 되지 않는다고 기자들에게 말했다.
