브릭스 다음은 픽트 한국·인니·체코·폴란드·터키가 새로운 경제 기적의 주역
브릭스(BRICs)의 시대가 저물고 픽트(PICKT)의 시대가 온다.중국•브라질•인도•러시아 등 4대 신흥경제국을 가리키는 브릭스는 알겠는데 픽트는 금시초문이라고요? 당연히 그러실 겁니다. 제가 만든 조어(造語)니까요. 미국의 투자 전문가인 러처 샤머가 골라준 다섯 나라를 묶어 제멋대로 작명해본 것입니다. 따라서 원작자는 어디까지나 샤머입니다.
샤머는 미국 투자금융업계에선 꽤 알려진 인물입니다. 글로벌 투자운용회사인 모건스탠리에서 20년째 이머징 마켓, 즉 신흥국 담당 책임자로 일하고 있습니다. 그가 지난달 초 책을 냈습니다. 제목이 『브레이크아웃 네이션스(Breakout Nations)』입니다. 지붕 뚫고 하이킥처럼 ‘새롭게 치고 올라오는 나라들’ 정도의 의미가 될 것 같습니다. ‘다음 경제 기적을 찾아서(In Pursuit of Next Economic Miracles)’란 부제(副題)가 달려 있습니다. 글로벌 투자자들 사이에 이 책이 화제라고 합니다. 지난 주말 영국의 파이낸셜 타임스에 장문의 북리뷰가 실리기도 했습니다.
브릭스의 성장세가 둔화 조짐을 보이면서 글로벌 투자자들은 벌써 다른 데로 눈을 돌리고 있습니다. 때맞춰 나온 책이 이 책입니다. 샤머는 브릭스의 뒤를 이을 ‘독수리 5형제’로 한국•인도네시아•체코•폴란드•터키 등 다섯 나라를 골랐습니다. 영문 국가명의 첫 글자를 적당히 조합하면 ‘픽트(PICKT)’가 됩니다.
샤머가 차기 경제강국의 금메달리스트로 꼽은 나라는 한국입니다. 이미 1인당 GDP(국내총생산) 2만~2만5000달러대에 진입한 한국이 세계적인 브랜드 파워를 가진 제조업을 바탕으로 새로운 경제강국으로 부상할 거란 예측입니다. 코리아 디스카운트의 주범인 북한 변수를 플러스 요인으로 평가한 점도 눈에 띕니다. 머지않아 북한 붕괴 시나리오가 현실화하면 경제적으로 엄청난 특수를 누릴 수 있다는 겁니다
2001년 처음 등장한 브릭스 이후에도 신흥경제국을 가리키는 다양한 조어들이 선보였습니다. 멕시코•호주•베트남•인도네시아•나이지리아•남아공 등 6개국을 묶어 마빈스(MAVINS)라고 하기도 했고, 마빈스에 한국•터키•필리핀•파키스탄•방글라데시를 보태 ‘넥스트 일레븐(Next Eleven)’이라고 부르기도 했습니다. 멕시코•인도네시아•한국•터키 등 믹트(MIKT) 4개국이 브릭스를 대체할 거란 전망도 나왔습니다.
어쨌거나 장밋빛 전망에 기분은 좋습니다. 우리 스스로 자신을 너무 과소평가하고 있는지도 모르겠습니다. 하지만 예측은 어디까지나 예측일 뿐입니다. 바깥의 평가만 믿고 자만할 일이 아닙니다. 미래는 부단히 노력하고 준비하는 자의 것이니까요.

Since the BRICs were first mentioned, various acronyms have been coined to refer to groups of emerging economies. Mexico, Australia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Nigeria, and South Africa ⓐare MAVINS, and the Next Eleven ⓑare MAVINS plus Korea, Turkey, the Philippines, Pakistan and Bangladesh. There was a forecast that MIKT, Mexico, Indonesia, Korea and Turkey, would replace ⓒBRICs.
Anyhow, it is pleasant to hear these rosy forecasts. We may be underestimating our own potential. ⓓHowever, a forecast is ⓔnothing but a prediction. We shouldn't be too self-complacent and rely on the evaluation of others. The future belongs to the ones who constantly prepare and endeavor.
