Greek woes push market down
Due to increasing chances of Greece being forced from the euro zone after it failed to form a coalition government, the Kospi plummeted by 58.43 points or 3.08 percent from a day earlier, closing at 1,840.53 yesterday. Seoul's main bourse took a direct hit from growing concern about Europe after Greek politicians failed to form a coalition government. The Kospi nosedived by 58.43 points from the previous day to barely hold the 1,840 mark yesterday.

그리스 정치인들이 연립정부 구성에 실패하면서 '유럽 공포'가 확산돼 한국 증시가 직접적인 타격을 입었다. 코스피는 어제 전일보다 58.43포인트 급락해 지수 1840선을 겨우 유지했다.
Breaking the 1,880 mark early in the morning, the Kospi continued to tumble throughout the afternoon, closing at 1,840.53. Right before closing, the figure briefly tripped below the 1,840 line but moved back at the last minute. It was the first time the market fell below 1,850 since Jan. 11, when it closed at 1,845.55.

코스피지수는 이날 아침 일찍 1880대로 내려갔고 오후에도 계속 떨어져 1840.53으로 장을 마감했다. 마감 직전에는 한때 잠시 지수가 1840 아래로 떨어졌으나 장 마감을 앞두고 다시 회복했다.
For the past six days, the Kospi has plummeted, shedding a total of 110 points, from 1,960 to 1,840. Foreign investors' selling spree continued yesterday for the 11th consecutive day, reflecting a severe contraction in investor confidence.

코스피지수는 지난 6일동안 1960에서 1840으로 총 110포인트 급락했다. 어제로 11일째 외국 투자자들의 투매가 이어져 한국증시에 대한 투자자 신뢰가 급격하게 위축되고 있음을 보여줬다.
The Korean won, as a result, weakened against the U.S. dollar, hitting a new low since Dec. 19. The won inched down 11.60 won from the previous day to close at 1,165.70 won.

"As Greek risks are amplified, uncertainties are increasing in the stock market, causing investors to panic," said Kim Se-joong, an analyst at Shinyoung Securities. Some analysts predicted the Kospi could slide below the 1,840 level. Global financial institutions are releasing forecasts that Greece's exit from the euro zone is looming.

신영증권 김세중 연구원은 "그리스 위기가 증폭되고 있기 때문에 증시에서 불확실성이 커지고 있어 투자자들을 공황 상태에 빠지게 하고 있다"고 말했다. 일부 증시 분석가들은 코스피지수가 1840대 아래로 더 떨어질 것이라고 예측했다. 세계 금융기관들은 그리스가 유로존에서 곧 탈퇴할 것이라는 전망을 내놓고 있다.
