KT, SK open up phone plans to customers of other stores

KT and SK Telecom announced yesterday that consumers who buy mobile phones from stores not affiliated with the service carriers can apply for fixed-period mobile phone subscriptions and are eligible for discounts.

KT will start the service today and SK Telecom will follow suit tomorrow.

Discounts based on fixed-term subscriptions were previously only offered to customers who bought mobile devices at shops operated by the carriers.

Both mobile carriers are set to offer one- and two-year contracts that can be extended later. Discounts of around 17,500 won ($14.8) will be available for people who sign up to pay a monthly rate of 54,000 won for two years.

If a customer cancels the subscription before the contract expires, they will have to pay a penalty.
