Samsung chairman takes over reins at welfare foundation

Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee was recently named head of the Samsung Life Public Welfare foundation, said the nation’s top conglomerate yesterday.

Lee succeeded Lee Soo-bin, chairman of Samsung Life Insurance, who ended his term on May 31. The 71-year-old will maintain his position as senior manager at the foundation.

It was initially launched as Dongbang Social Welfare Foundation in 1982 but had its name changed in 1991. The foundation established and runs Samsung Medical Center and 23 child day care centers in 15 cities nationwide.

The Samsung founder “is interested in social welfare activities, and this is a field that he has been constantly paying attention to ever since he returned to the helm,” said an official with Samsung.
