지금 카이스트에 필요한 것은 “알 이즈 웰!”
우리나라 네티즌들은 불법 다운로드를 흔히 ‘어둠의 경로’라 부른다. 그 세계에서 가장 히트친 영화 중 하나가 ‘세 얼간이’다. 2009년 제작된 이 인도 영화가 국내에서 정식 개봉된 건 지난해 여름이었다. 팬들은 “드디어 봉인이 풀렸다”며 기뻐했다. 작은 컴퓨터 화면으로, 엉성한 자막에 의존해 감상할 수밖에 없었던 작품을 비로소 제대로 볼 수 있게 됐으니 말이다.그리하여 적은 개봉관 수에도 불구하고 40만 관객 동원에 성공한 이 ‘강소영화’를 나는 끝내 극장에서 보지 않았다. 유치할 것 같았다. 영화 리뷰를 보아하니 “젊은이들이여, 꿈을 좇아라”가 주제인 듯했는데 그런 얘기를 듣고, 믿고, 실천하기에 내 나이는 많고 마음은 더 지쳐 있었다.
지난 주말 뭐 볼 거 없나 싶어 한 합법(!) 영화 다운로드 사이트를 살피다 이 영화를 다시 만났다. 네티즌 평점 단연 1위. 값도 저렴하니 까짓 속는 셈 치고 한번 보자 했다. 두 시간 넘는 러닝 타임 동안 컴퓨터 앞을 뜨지 못했다. 영화는 예상대로 유치했다. 한데 너무 리얼했다.
작품 배경은 ICE라는 인도 최고 공대다. 영화 초입, 대학 총장은 200명의 신입생을 모아놓고 일갈한다. 너희들은 뻐꾸기다, 40만 개의 알(지원자)을 밀어내고 다른 새의 둥지를 차지한 살인자라고. 인생은 레이스이며, 빨리 달리지 않으면 결국 짓밟힐 거라고. 여기 저항하는 세 얼간이(idiot)가 있으니 란초, 파르한, 라주다. 마침 한 학생이 로봇 개발에 몰두하느라 과제 제출이 늦자 총장은 가차없이 낙제를 준다. 졸업에 실패한 학생은 자살한다. “이건 살인”이라는 란초의 비난에 총장은 “스트레스를 못 견딘 게 내 탓이냐, 난 28등이던 학교를 1등으로 만든 사람”이라고 응수한다. 왠지 익숙한 시추에이션 아닌가.
우리나라 최고 공대 KAIST는 요즘 바람 잘 날이 없다. 지난해 봄 학생 4명이 잇따라 자살하면서 서남표 총장의 경쟁 중심 교육에 대한 논란이 시작됐다. 지난달 또 한 학생이 자살하고 송사까지 얽혀들면서 사태는 악화일로다. 급기야 총학생회는 23일 서 총장에게 퇴진을 요구했다. 총동문회는 이사회에 진상조사특위 구성을 요청했다
서 총장은 억울한 듯하다. 할 말도 많을 것이다. 한데 이것저것 다 떠나, 지금의 KAIST가 학생들이 공부에 열정을 쏟기 충분한 분위기인가. 영화 속 란초는 친구들이 현실의 불안에 떨 때마다 “알 이즈 웰(All is well)”이라고 격려한다. 인도식 발음 내지 표현으로 “다 잘될 거야” 정도의 의미일 게다. 지금 KAIST 구성원들에겐 오랜 반목과 불통의 늪에서 벗어나, 바로 그런 희망의 메시지를 공유할 계기가 필요하다. 그것이 서 총장의 용퇴라면 교육자로서 한번 해볼 만한 희생이 아닐까.
