Government officials, including Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik, fourth from left, participate in the groundbreaking ceremony of Saemangeum New Harbor held at the Saemangeum Seawall 33 Center in Gunsan, North Jeolla, yesterday. The harbor is a part of a project to develop an economic hub city of Northeast Asia, building a port along the coastal waters of the seawall connecting Sinsi and Bian Island by investing 2.55 trillion won ($2.18 billion). The Korea Maritime Institute said the new port will handle 80 million tons of container traffic annually and is also expected to create 22,400 jobs. [YONHAP]
