기분 좋아 마시고 속상해서 마시고, 반갑다고 마시고 서운하다 마시고, 잊기 위해 마시고 잊지 못해 마시고, 헤어진다 마시고 또 만났다 마시고…. 술을 마시는 이유는 셀 수 없이 많다. 붙이면 다 이유가 된다. 술을 마시는 이유가 구천구백구십여덟 가지라면 술을 못 마시는 이유는 단 두 가지뿐이다. 술이 없거나 몸이 술을 안 받아서다.

 대개 “(술) 한 잔 할까?”로 시작하지만 한 잔으로 끝나는 술자리는 내가 아는 한 없다. 한 잔이 두 잔 되고, 다섯 잔은 열 잔이 된다. 처음에는 사람이 술을 마시지만 나중에는 술이 술을 마시고, 급기야는 술이 사람을 마신다. 일찍이 중국 사람들은 술 마시는 사람들의 갖가지 행태를 10자(字)로 정리했다. 취객십경(醉客十景)이다.

 낙(樂), 설(說), 소(笑), 조(調), 창(唱). 즐기고 얘기하고 웃고 어울리고 노래하는 것이 사람이 술을 마시는 모습이라면 노(怒), 매(罵), 타(打), 곡(哭), 토(吐)는 술이 술을 마시거나 술이 사람을 마시는 모습이다. 화내고 욕하고 때리고 울고 먹은 걸 토해내니 추태가 따로 없다. 술자리를 시작할 때는 다들 신사이고 숙녀지만 빈 술병이 쌓이면서 가수와 댄서로 변하고, 투사나 전사가 되기도 한다. 과묵하던 부하 직원이 달변가로 변한다든가, 근엄하던 부장님 입에서 육두문자가 쏟아져 나오기도 한다. 술에 취하면 그 사람의 진면목이 드러난다.

 민주통합당 임수경 의원이 술자리에서 한 말 때문에 며칠째 곤욕을 치르고 있다. 술집에서 우연히 만난 탈북자 청년에게 “개념 없는 탈북자 ××들이 어디 대한민국 국회의원한테 개기는 거야. 대한민국에 왔으면 입 닥치고 조용히 살아. 이 변절자 ××들아”라고 귀를 의심케 하는 막말을 했다는 것이다. 탈북자를 향해 ‘변절자’라고 했다면 종북 논란에 휩싸이는 건 당연하다. 자업자득이다. 맨 정신으로는 도저히 할 수 없는 폭언이 임 의원 입에서 튀어나온 걸 보면 취중실언일 가능성이 커 보이지만 취중진담으로 보는 사람들도 있다. 아무튼 술이 ‘웬수’다.
 술 때문에 벌어지는 크고 작은 사건•사고만 한 해 36만 건이다. 경찰서 지구대에서는 매일 밤 취객과의 전쟁이 벌어진다. 살인•강도•강간•절도•폭력 등 5대 범죄의 약 30%가 취중 소행이라는 통계도 있다. 그럼에도 술에는 관대한 게 우리 사회다. 술을 마시고 행패를 부리거나 사고를 쳐 경찰에 넘겨져도 10명 중 7~8명은 훈방된다. 술에 너그러운 문화를 바로잡아 ‘주폭(酒暴)’을 뿌리 뽑자고 대대적인 캠페인을 벌이는 신문도 있다.

 적당한 음주는 오히려 건강에 도움이 된다. 인간관계를 부드럽게 하는 효과도 있다. 술에는 죄가 없다. 마시는 사람이 문제일 뿐이다. 술은 비와 같다. 옥토에 내리면 꽃을 피우지만 진흙에 내리면 진흙탕을 만든다.
