At 2+2 meeting, ministers vow to bolster alliance

리언 패네타 미국 국방장관은 한국군의 탄도 미사일 사거리 연장 문제 협의에 진전이 있다고 목요일 말했다.
"I think we are making good progress, and our hope is that we can arrive at an agreeable solution soon," Panetta said at a joint press conference after the one-day, so-called 2+2 meeting in Washington Thursday. Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan and Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin represented Korea and State Secretary Hillary Clinton accompanied Panetta on the U.S. side.

미국 워싱턴DC에서 '한미 외교ㆍ국방장관(2+2) 회담'을 마친 후 가진 공동기자회견에서 패네타 장관은 "꽤 많은 진전이 있다고 생각하며 조만간 양측이 동의할 수 있는 해법에 도달하기를 기대한다"고 말했다. 이 회담에는 한국측에서 김성환 외교장관과 김관진 국방장관이, 미국측에서 힐러리 클린턴 국무장관과 패네타 국방장관이 참석했다.
Seoul repeated its long-standing call to ease the limits on the range of its ballistic missile, which is 300 kilometers (186 miles) under a 2001 revised treaty, after the North tested a long-range missile in March. The test, which Pyongyang said was an attempt to put a satellite in space, failed, and rumors followed of a third nuclear test.

북한이 3월에 장거리미사일을 시험 발사한 이후 한국정부는 2001년 개정협약에 사거리 300 킬로미터로 제한된 탄도미사일의 사거리를 연장하자는 오래된 요청을 다시 제기했다. 북한이 인공위성 궤도진입 시도라고 주장하는 3월의 장거리미사일 발사 시험은 실패로 끝났고, 그 이후 북한이 3차 핵실험을 강행할 것이라는 소문이 이어졌다.
At the 2+2 talks, the second of its kind after a first round in Seoul in 2010, the ministers also agreed to initiate joint defense initiatives to address nontraditional security concerns including attacks in cyberspace.

2010년 서울에서 첫 회담이 열린 이후 이번이 두 번째인 2+2회담에서 한미 외교, 국방 장관들은 사이버 공격과 같은 종래와는 다른 새로운 안보문제에 대처하는 공동방위 계획을 수립하는데 합의했다.
