호환 · 마마보다 무섭고 때로 코미디 부르는 ‘친일’ 딱지 붙이기
한•일 관계는 끓는 기름과 같다고 생각한다. 물은 섭씨 100도를 넘으면 펄펄 끓지만 기름은 다르다. 아무런 기색이 없어 뜨겁지 않은 줄 착각하기 쉽다. 식용유는 240도를 넘겨야 슬슬 연기가 나기 시작한다. 괜찮을 것으로 생각해 덥석 손을 넣었다간 순식간에 벌겋게 데기 십상이다. 지난주 일본과의 군사정보보호협정 체결을 둘러싼 우리 측 행태가 꼭 그랬다. 슬쩍 손을 담가도 괜찮을 줄 알았나 보다. 웬걸. 양손에 3도 화상을 입고 말았다.그렇더라도 언제까지나 한•일 관계가 냉탕•온탕을 오가는 것은 정상이 아니다. 적어도 ‘보통관계’의 비중이 ‘특수관계’보다는 많아져야 할 텐데 현실은 녹록하지 않다. 예를 들어 친일(親日)이라는 단어를 보자. 우리 사회에서는 어감이 좋지 않은 정도를 넘어 정적을 공격하고 인격을 매도하는 용도로도 쓰인다. 가히 호환•마마보다 무서운 게 친일이다. 30년 전만 해도 친일은 친북(親北)과 비슷한 처지였다. 그러나 친북은 그동안 많이 격상됐고, 햇볕론자부터 ‘꼴통 종북’까지 스펙트럼도 다양해졌다. 친일 홀로 여•야, 진보•보수, 남•북한을 막론하고 모두 기피하는 단어로 남아있다.
친일이 가압류 딱지나 부적처럼 널리 애용되다 보니 웃지 못할 블랙코미디가 양산된다. 몇 년 전 일제하 친일행위 진상규명특별법을 만들자며 거품을 물던 여당 대표가 자신의 부친이 일제 헌병이었다는 사실이 드러나자 사과하고 자리를 물러났다. 고 김대중 전 대통령은 방일 중 일제 시절 은사를 찾아가 창씨개명 이름(도요다)으로 자신을 소개했다가 정적들의 공격을 받았다. 후보 시절의 고 노무현 전 대통령은 30대 변호사일 때 요트를 즐긴 사실을 축소하려 애썼다. 대통령이 된 후에야 그가 일본 오사카에서 열린 요트대회에 나가 우승까지 한 사실이 알려졌다. 당시 우승 트로피 디자인은 기모노 차림의 일본 여성 인형이었다. 아마 대선 기간 중 그런 모습이 공개됐다면 꽤 타격을 받았을 것이다. 친일이 도깨비 방망이처럼 사용되니 유치한 소동들이 빚어지고 ‘자뻑’이 속출하는 것이다.
지난달 26일 주한일본대사관 공보문화원 주최로 ‘일•한의 현재, 과거, 미래’ 주제의 심포지엄이 열렸다. 마침 이날은 백범 김구 선생 63주기였다. 양국 전문가들의 토론을 흥미 있게 지켜보았지만, 특히 한•일 과거사 문제 권위자 최서면(84) 안중근의사유해발굴추진단 자료위원장의 마무리 코멘트가 인상적이었다. 최씨는 오전에 백범기념관에서 열린 추모식에 다녀왔다며 백범의 생전 어록을 소개했다. “광복 후 한 기자가 김구 선생께 ‘친일파는 언제 처단하려 하십니까’라고 물었다. 그러자 백범은 ‘(일본이) 옆에 사는데, 친일파는 많을수록 좋다. 내가 처단하려는 친일파는 반민족적 친일파다’라고 답했다.”
