놀아본 사람이 늙어서도 잘 논다 한 살이라도 젊을 때 많이 놀자

수능시험이 석 달 남짓 남은 요즘 남자 고3•재수생을 둔 엄마들 걱정이 크다고 한다. 인터넷에서 ‘수능 브레이커’로 불리는 3대 악재 때문이다. 첫 악재로 꼽히던 유럽축구선수권대회(유로 2012)는 이미 끝났지만 열흘 후 런던 올림픽이 개막한다. 온라인게임 ‘디아블로 3’도 남자 수험생들을 유혹하고 있다. 엄마들은 왜 남자아이가 유독 스포츠나 게임에 사족을 못 쓰는지 의아해하면서 “남편만 화성에서 온 줄 알았더니 아들도 화성인이더라”고 한탄한단다.

　그러나 세상은 공평해서 여학생에게도 덫은 있다. 아이돌 스타에게 바치는 시간과 관심이다. JTBC에 아이돌 스타들이 출연할 때마다 귀신같이 알고 한나절 전부터 줄 서는 청소년 중 남학생은 거의 없다.
얼마 전 월스트리트저널에 재미있는 기사가 실렸다. 캐나다 맥길대 등 학계의 연구결과를 인용한 기사는 ‘성장기 소녀들은 로맨틱하고 섹시한 느낌에 민감하기 때문에 저스틴 비버 같은 팝스타에게 소년들보다 훨씬 더 열광한다’고 지적했다. 기능성 자기공명영상촬영(fMRI)으로 관찰했더니 좋아하는 음악을 들을 때 소녀들의 뇌에서 쾌락에 관계하는 도파민이 많이 분비되더라는 것이다. 대신 소년들은 가수보다 스포츠 스타에 더 빠져든다고 한다. 팝 음악이 중독성이 강해서만은 아닌 것 같다. 19세기에도 열성적인 여성 팬들이 리스트(헝가리 피아니스트•작곡가)에게 옷을 벗어 던지고 그의 머리카락 한 올이라도 얻어가려고 다투었다니 말이다. 1969년 클리프 리처드, 92년 뉴 키즈 온 더 블록이 내한 공연할 때 이제는 아줌마가 된 ‘소녀’들이 난리쳤듯이 저스틴 비버가 한국에 오면 또 난리가 날 것이다. 세대는, 역사는 그렇게 되풀이된다.

　월스트리트저널이 소개한 연구결과 중 특히 눈길을 끈 게 있다. 10대 시절 형성된 음악적 취향은 뇌의 내부에 깊이 각인돼 평생 유지된다는 점이다. 나는 버스커버스커나 장기하도 좋아하지만, 지금 들으면 구식 정서와 감상이 느껴지는 트윈폴리오•사월과오월•라나에로스포•김추자의 옛 노래들을 접할 때의 가슴 찡한 아련함까지 주지는 못한다. 이제 그 이유를 알 것 같다.

　그래서 말인데, 역시 한 살이라도 더 젊을 때 많이 놀아두어야 한다. 좋은 음악, 좋은 취미가 뇌 깊숙이 각인되게끔 말이다. 그래야 늙어서 놀 줄도 모르고 그렇다고 술은 몸이 받쳐주지 않는 한심한 처지에 내몰리지 않는다. 보건복지부•국민연금공단 조사에 따르면 우리나라 성인남녀의 64.1%는 노후 여가생활에 대한 인식이나 준비가 돼있지 않았다(본지 7월 16일자 8면). 고기도 먹어본 사람이 잘 먹는다. ‘노세 노세 젊어서 노세’가 맞다. 마침 문화체육관광부도 하반기부터 누구나 악기 하나, 스포츠 한 종목을 익히자는 ‘1인 2기(技)’ 정책을 편단다.
