SK Telecom gives away old smartphones to new clients

SK Telecom will give away 500 used Galaxy S smartphones to new subscribers. It is the first time the telecommunication company has given away smartphones.

The phones will be given to the first 500 people who sign up for service at the company’s T World Shop (www.tworldshop.co.kr) from 2:00 p.m. today.

Winners will also get 5,000 won ($4.43) monthly discounts on a one-year calling plan. An 11,000 won monthly discount will be offered for two-year plans.

SK said the event is part of its “T Ecophone” campaign to encourage people to use second-hand phones. The campaign was launched a year ago. SK purchases used phones, services them and sells them back to consumers at lower prices.

In the first month of the campaign, 280 used phones were resold. After 11 months, about 58,000 units have been sold. Used phones under the name of “T Ecophone” are available on the T World Shop Web site and offline SKT stores.
