The American white wine Kendall-Jackson Avant Chardonnay 2009 received the highest rating for low-price Chardonnays selling for 10,000 won ($8.82) to 29,900 won at the 19th Annual Wine Consumer Report co-hosted by wine retailer Winenara and the JoongAng Ilbo.

Chile’s Santa Helena Siglo De Oro Chardonnay 2011 and American Foxbrook Chardonnay 2009 took second and third place.

Kang Pil-soon, president of the wine shop The Wine, and nine other wine experts and seven wine lovers ranked 68 wines.

Among the 68 wines, 30 were Chilean and 13 Australian. There were eight French wines, none of which made it into the top 10.

Kendall Jackson, which made the top-ranking wine, is based in Sonoma Valley, California.

The retail price of its wine is 29,900 won. The older Kendall Jackson Grand Reserve sells for 159,000 won.

Chile’s Santa Helena, which made the No. 2 wine, was founded in 1942.

“The fragrance of tropical fruits such as mango and pineapple and a coconut scent were naturally blended,” said sommelier Yang Yoon-joo of the wine bar Half Past Ten, who participated in the tasting.

Maquinas Rivera Fresno, CEO of Santa Helena, said its Chardonnay wines “go well with Korea’s live octopus dish” during an interview with the domestic press when he visited here at the end of last year.
