Run-amok crimes alarm the nation

A string of brutal and sometimes fatal crimes against random strangers has jolted the nation, with the latest occurring in the middle of Seoul yesterday.
*run amok: (공공 장소에서) 갑자기 미쳐 날뛰다

가장 최근에는 어제 서울 중심에서 발생한 것을 비롯해 ‘묻지마’ 흉기 난동 사건들이 잇따라 발생하면서 시민들이 충격에 빠졌다.
Since Aug. 17, there have been eight violent crimes in which men armed with knives or box cutters attacked strangers - possibly lashing out at society as a whole.

사회에 대한 분노를 표출하는 듯 칼을 든 남성이 모르는 행인들을 공격한 사건이 8월17일 이후로 8차례 발생했다.
All of the suspects were on the losing side of Korea’s competitive society, unsuccessful in keeping up with the Kims and achieving upward social mobility.

범인들은 모두 경쟁이 치열한 한국 사회에서 다른 사람들과 경쟁에서 뒤지거나 사회적 신분상승에 성공하지 못한 사회적 패배자들이다.
On Wednesday, a disgruntled unemployed man surnamed Kim returned to a former workplace in Yeouido, western Seoul, and allegedly stabbed two of his former colleagues. The suspect had 200 won ($0.18) in his pocket when he was arrested and was living in a tiny Seoul apartment.

수요일에는 불만을 품은 실직자 김모씨가 서울 여의도 전 직장에 찾아가 전 직장 동료 2명을 칼로 찔렀다. 붙잡혔을 때 범인은 주머니에 200원 밖에 없었고, 서울에서 작은 아파트에 살고 있다.
The 30-year-old Kim plotted the attack because he believed he was forced to quit his job after his co-workers said bad things about him. After the stabbings, Kim ran and stabbed two passersby he thought were chasing him.

범인 김모(30)씨는 직장 동료들이 자신을 험담해서 어쩔 수 없이 퇴직했다고 믿고 공격을 준비했다. 범인은 전 직장동료들을 칼로 찌른 뒤 달아나면서 자신을 쫓아오는 것으로 생각한 행인 2명을 칼로 찔렀다.
Another crime occurred Tuesday at around 9:30 p.m. in Jung District, Ulsan, when a 27-year-old man allegedly stabbed a female owner of a grocery store near his house. Police reported the suspect, surnamed Lee, was without a job and carried out the attack for no apparent reason.

울산 중구에서 화요일 오후 9시30분쯤 또 다른 묻지마 칼부림 사건이 발생했다. 27세 남성이 자신의 집 부근에 있는 슈퍼마켓 여주인을 칼로 찔렀다. 경찰에 따르면 범인 이모씨는 직업이 없고 뚜렷한 이유 없이 범행을 저질렀다.
