웬만큼 나이 든 한국인 중에는 “내 인생을 글로 쓰면 장편소설이 나올 것”이라는 사람이 많다. 특히 식민지•전쟁•고도성장기를 온몸으로 겪은 60대 이후 나이라면 장편 아니라 여러 권짜리 대하소설로 풀어내도 시원치 않을 것이다. 그만큼 굴곡과 고비가 많은 세대이니까.굳이 소설감까진 아니어도 어떤 일을 계기로 나머지 인생이 달라진 경험을 누구나 갖고 있을 것이다. 대학입시처럼 선택의 결과일 수도 있고, 전혀 예상치 못한 사건•사고 때문일 수도 있다. 메릴 스트리프의 40대 시절 매력이 돋보이는 영화 ‘비포 앤 애프터(Before and After)’를 예로 들어 보자. 행복하던 중산층 가족이 아들 제이콥의 과실치사 사건을 계기로 갈등과 불신, 고뇌에 빠져든다. 사춘기의 딸 주디스는 “그 사건 후 우리 가족은 다시는 이전으로 돌아갈 수 없었다”고 독백한다.
25일(미 현지시간) 작고한 우주비행사 닐 암스트롱은 그런 면에서 참 드문 경우다. 달 표면을 걸어본 사람은 지금까지 12명뿐이고, 생존자는 겨우 8명이다. 그러나 암스트롱은 다른 이들과 달리 ‘Before’와 ‘After’에 큰 차이가 없었다. 그는 6세 때 처음 비행기를 탔고 운전면허증보다 비행사 자격증을 먼저 딴 타고난 우주인이다. 한국전쟁에 참전해 78회나 출격했으니 생사의 고비도 많이 넘겼을 것이다. 덕분에 종교인 못지않은 평정심과 자제력을 키웠던 것일까. 그는 38세에 인류 최초로 달을 밟은 뒤 “다시 달에 갈 계획은 없다”고 선언했다. 교수, 기업체 대변인으로 평범한 삶을 보내면서 남들이 자신을 영웅시하는 것을 극도로 꺼렸다. 정계 진출 유혹도 뿌리쳤고 1994년 이후엔 경매 돈벌이에 악용될 가능성 때문에 친필 사인조차 일절 해주지 않았다.
달 착륙 경험자들의 고백을 담은 『문더스트』(앤드루 스미스)•『우주로부터의 귀환』(다치바나 다카시) 같은 책을 보면 달에 다녀온 뒤에는 대체로 생각과 삶이 바뀐다. 암스트롱에 이어 두 번째로 달을 밟은 버즈 올드린은 착륙선에서 달 표면으로 나가기 전에 지구에서 가져온 포도주•빵으로 혼자 성찬식을 올렸을 만큼 독실한 기독교 신자였다. 그러나 지구 귀환 후 의욕을 잃고 우울증을 앓다 한때 정신병원 신세까지 졌다. 제임스 어윈•찰스 듀크는 반대로 열렬한 기독교 전도사로 변신했다.
살다 보면 내 뜻과 무관하게 주변 환경이 바뀌거나 심지어 사건•사고를 만나기도 한다. 마음의 평정을 유지하기가 참 힘든 시기다. 암스트롱이 그런 사람들을 위해 지혜로운 말 한마디라도 남겨주고 떠났더라면 싶다. 영화 ‘비포 앤 애프터’ 마지막 장면에 나오는 역설적 대사가 조금은 위로가 되지 않을까. “인생에서 행복을 완전히 몰아낼 수는 없는 것 같다. 괴로움이 그렇듯이.”
