영원한 사랑을 위해 자물쇠를 채우는 그 심정은 이해하지만
모처럼 서울 남산에 올라갔다가 깜짝 놀랐다. 외국인 관광객이 그렇게 많을 줄 몰랐다. 버스에서 내린 외국인 관광객들을 케이블카가 쉴 새 없이 정상으로 실어나르는데도 매표소 앞의 긴 줄이 줄지 않았다. 도리어 내가 외국인이 된 느낌이었다.지난해 서울시가 외국인들에게 가장 매력적인 서울의 관광명소를 물었더니 남산의 N서울타워가 1위로 나왔다고 한다. 설문조사에 응한 외국인 1849명 중 가장 많은 295명이 N서울타워를 꼽았다는 것이다. 서울을 한눈에 조망할 수 있는 장점도 매력이지만 또 다른 이유가 있다고 한다. 남산타워에서 연인과 ‘사랑의 자물쇠’를 채우고 서울시내를 내려다보며 입을 맞추는 이벤트를 서울 관광의 필수 코스로 꼽는 외국인이 많다는 것이다.
‘사랑의 자물쇠’가 남산의 명물로 자리 잡았다고 한다. 과연 백문(百聞)이 불여일견(不如一見)이다. N서울타워 주위의 철제 난간마다 각양각색의 자물쇠들이 빼곡히 매달려 있다. 빈틈이 없을 정도다. 사방을 두른 난간으로도 모자라 대형 자물쇠 트리(tree)까지 만들어 놓았다. 자물쇠에 적힌 이름과 문구를 보니 국적도 다양하다. 한국인보다 외국인이 되레 더 많은 것 같다. 2006년 이후 갑자기 생겨난 현상이라고 한다.
‘사랑의 자물쇠’가 서울에만 있는 건 아니다. 도쿄에도 있고, 부다페스트에도 있다. 이탈리아에도 있고, 중국에도 있다. 얼마 전 파리에 갔더니 센강(江)을 가로지르는 ‘예술의 다리(Pont des Arts)’에 온갖 종류의 자물쇠가 주렁주렁 매달려 있었다. 한글도 눈에 많이 띄었다. 전 세계에서 파리를 찾은 연인들이 미리 준비해 온 자물쇠를 다리 난간에 매달고 열쇠를 센강에 던져버림으로써 자기들 사랑이 영원하기를 기원한다는 것이다. 파리시는 다리의 안전과 풍경을 고려해 자물쇠가 달린 철망을 강제 철거하기도 했지만 아무 소용이 없자 결국 두 손을 들었다.
자물쇠를 채우는 그 심정은 이해하지만 그런다고 사랑이 영원할 리 없다. 세월과 함께 사랑이 식으면서 자물쇠도 결국 녹슨 고철로 변하고 만다. 일시적 감정에 휩쓸려 아름다운 풍경과 환경을 해치는 이기적 행동 아닐까. 이런 비(非)낭만적이고 야박한 생각을 하는 사람이 나만은 아닌 모양이다. 며칠 전 프랑스의 여성작가인 아녜스 푸아리에가 인터내셔널 헤럴드 트리뷴지(紙)에 비슷한 생각을 담은 글을 썼다. 사랑의 자물쇠를 채워 사랑이 영원할 수 있기를 바라는 것은 철부지 환상이며, 진정한 사랑에 대한 모욕이라는 것이다. 그러니 파리에서만큼은 제발 사랑의 자물쇠 놀음을 자제해 달라는 것이다.
본질적으로 사랑은 깨지기 쉽다. 그 허약함을 인정하고, 상대를 구속하지 않는 것이 진정한 사랑 아닐까. 사랑은 창살 없는 감옥에 서로를 가두는 것이 아니다.
