KakaoTalk fetes milestone as users pass 60 million

Kakao, the developer of the popular KakaoTalk mobile messenger service, said yesterday the number of its messenger users has topped the 60-million mark.

KakaoTalk, launched in March 2010, is a free messenger application that runs on the Android and iOS operating systems. Kakao has seen users surge as a growing number of smartphone owners rushed to the free service, ditching text messages that usually cost 20 won ($0.02) each.

The service said the number of daily visitors averaged 26 million this month, sending 4.1 billion messages a day. This is roughly equivalent to half the population sending 68 messages each day. The growing user base will undoubtedly help Kakao’s new services. Since rolling out a game platform on July 30, Kakao has expanded the service to 13 games on its Android version and eight games on the iOS version.
