자녀교육에 쏟아붓다 ‘에듀푸어’ 전락한 가련한 한국 부모들
지난 주말 동네 서점에 갔다. 책 한 권을 골라 잠깐 훑어보려고 자리를 잡고 앉았는데 40대 초반으로 보이는 부인이 아이들과 함께 다가와 옆자리에 앉았다. 큰아이는 초등학교 5~6학년, 작은아이는 1~2학년쯤 돼 보였다. 엄마와 두 아이의 대화는 한국어 반, 영어 반이었다. 단어를 섞어 쓰는 정도가 아니라 완벽하게 두 언어를 자유자재로 왔다갔다 했다.요즘 주변에 보면 영어 잘하는 아이들이 참 많다. 아이들끼리 놀이터에서 영어로 떠들거나 산책을 하면서 부모와 영어로 얘기하는 경우도 종종 봤다. 막힘 없이 영어가 술술 나오고, 발음도 버터 바른 것처럼 유창하다. 중학교에 들어가 영어를 배우기 시작한 우리 세대의 ‘콩글리시’와는 차원이 다르다. 하기야 ㄱㄴㄷㄹ과 함께 abcd를 배우고, 동네 ‘어린이집’에서도 영어로 동요를 부르는 세상이다. 영어를 할 줄 아는 사범이 있어야 태권도 학원도 장사가 된다.
이중언어 교육은 어려서부터 시켜야 효과가 있다고 한다. 언어의 정체성이 한 가지로 굳어지기 전에 두 가지 언어를 동시에 익혀야 커서 자연스럽게 이중언어를 구사할 수 있게 된다는 것이다. 이중언어 교육이 두뇌 발달에도 도움이 된다는 연구 결과도 있다. 부모 무릎에서부터 두 가지 언어로 아이들과 대화를 할 수 있으면 좋겠지만 모든 부모가 그렇게 할 수 있는 것은 아니다. 결국 사교육에 의존하는 수밖에 없다. 영어만이 아니다. 다른 과목도 마찬가지다. 웬만큼 선행학습을 해서는 특목고에 갈 수 없고, 일류대학에 갈 수 없는 세상이다.
과도한 교육비 탓에 가난해진 ‘에듀푸어(Edu Poor•교육빈곤층)’가 전국에 82만 가구라고 한다. 유치원 이상 자녀를 둔 9가구 중 1가구꼴이다. 현대경제연구원의 조사 결과다. 지난해 기준으로 에듀푸어는 소비지출의 28.5%를 교육비로 썼다고 한다. 일반 가구의 18.1%보다 훨씬 높다. 중•고등학생을 둔 에듀푸어의 경우 월평균 81만원을 교육비로 지출해 일반 가구의 58만원보다 월등히 많았다. 하지만 에듀푸어의 월평균 소득은 313만원으로, 일반가구 평균(433만원)보다 120만원이 적었다. 적게 벌어 교육에는 더 쓰니 빈곤해질 수밖에 없다.
교육이 끝이 아니다. 취업할 때까지 용돈 대주며 부양해야 하고, 결혼을 시키려면 또 목돈이 들어간다. 그러니 노후 준비할 여력이 없다. LG경제연구원에 따르면 한국 부모들이 자녀를 독립시키고 본격적으로 은퇴 준비를 할 수 있는 기간은 8.7년밖에 안 된다고 한다. 우리나라의 노인빈곤율은 45%로, 경제협력개발기구(OECD) 34개 회원국 중 1위다. 자녀 뒷바라지하다 대책 없이 노후를 맞는 한심한 부모! 남 얘기가 아니다.
