Jay Y. Lee to meet Carlos Slim and unit chiefs in Americas

Jay Y. Lee, president and chief operating officer of Samsung Electronics, left Seoul yesterday for the United States to check on Samsung’s operations there and meet with key figures at mobile telecommunication firms over the next two weeks, Samsung said yesterday.

The son and heir apparent of Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee is also set to visit Mexico to talk with Carlos Slim, a Mexican business magnate and the richest person in the world. Slim is chairman and chief executive of telecommunications firms Telmex and America Movil. The former is Mexico’s top telecommunications company that also deals with fixed-line service, and the latter, a top mobile carrier in Latin America. The meeting comes just five months after Slim visited Seoul in April. Samsung refused to offer details about their upcoming conversation but industry insiders forecast the focus will lie in stepping up cooperation in the mobile service sector.
