Nationality laundering
We are dumbfounded by the shocking news that many from the upper class are being summoned by the prosecution one after another for their suspicious involvement in sending their children to prestigious foreign schools./상류층의 많은 사람들이 자녀를 유명 외국인 학교에 보내는 것과 관련하여 그들의 혐의에 대해서 잇따라 검찰에 소환되고 있다는 쇼킹한 뉴스에 우리는 말문이 다 막힐 지경이다/ Most of them are sons and daughters of chaebol chairmen, lawyers and former lawmakers./ 그들의 대다수는 재벌 회장, 변호사, 전직 국회의원의 아들과 딸들이다/ They reportedly paid as much as 100 million won ($89,340) to education brokers in return for counterfeit passports or citizenship from Latin American or Caribbean nations in order to send their kids to foreign schools./ 보도에 따르면 그들은 그들의 아이들을 외국인 학교에 보내기 위해 라틴 아메리카 또는 캐리비안 국가들의 여권 또는 시민권을 위조하는 대가로 교육브로커에게 1억 원 정도를 지불했다고 한다/Prosecutors or the press may still call them “leaders of our society,” but we are wondering if they really deserve such respect and honor./ 검찰관계자 또는 언론들이 여전히 그들을 “우리 사회의 지도층”이라 부르고 있지만 우리는 그들이 정말로 그러한 존경과 명예를 받을만한 자격이 있는지 의심스럽다/ A wife of a chaebol husband dared to engage in an illegitimate scam to enroll her kid at an esteemed foreign school by using a fake passport, despite the fact that her husband’s relative serves as a high-profile official in the government./ 재벌 남편의 아내는 남편의 친척이 정부 고위관료라는 사실에도 불구하고 허위 여권으로 유명 외국인 학교에 아이를 등록시키기 위해 불법적인 신용사기를 자행했다/ A wife of an executive member of a big company even gave up her Korean nationality to send her child to another top foreign school and help her husband maintain his social status./ 대기업 임원의 한 아내는 다른 최고의 외국인학교에 아이를 보내기 위해 그리고 남편의 사회적 지위를 유지하는 것을 돕기 위해 심지어 한국국적을 포기하기도 했다/
What they demonstrated is not befitting of their status./ 그들이 보여주는 것은 그들의 지위에 걸맞지 않은 행동이다/ It shows an utterly low moral standard./ 바로 지극히 낮은 도덕적 수준을 보여주는 것이다/ What can we expect from the children of those who are immersed in basking in their privileges?/그들의 특권을 이용하여 불법을 저지르는 이런 사람들의 아이들로부터 우리가 기대할 것이 무엇이 있겠는가?/
The Incheon District Prosecutors’ Office said that 50 to 60 suspects will be summoned soon./ 인천지검은 50-60명의 혐의자들을 곧 소환할 것이라고 밝혔다/ A particular group’s blind preference for foreign schools for their kids has reached a worrisome level./ 특정 집단의 아이들을 위한 외국인학교에 대한 맹목적인 선호현상은 우려 수준에 도달했다/ Reasons for their deviant actions seem obvious./ 그들이 일탈의 행동을 하는 이유는 분명하다/ When their children enter local foreign schools, they can learn foreign languages without studying abroad, develop more personal connections at home and be easily admitted to esteemed colleges overseas./ 아이들이 지역 외국인 학교에 들어가면 유학을 가지 않고도 외국어를 배울 수 있고 국내에서 개인적인 관계를 더 개발하여 외국의 유명한 대학에 쉽게 들어갈 수 있기 때문이다/ It’s so important to these people that they even risk their nationality./ 자신들의 국적에 대해 심지어 위험을 무릅쓰는 것은 이들에게 아주 중요하다/ It is impossible to expect their children to grow into conscientious and respectable citizens in the future./ 그들의 아이들이 미래에 양심적이고 존경받을 수 있는 시민으로 자라리라고 기대하는 것은 불가능하다/
The prosecution must strictly deal with the case to establish social order by thoroughly investigating the charges, including the forgery of official documents./ 검찰은 공식적인 서류의 위조죄를 포함하여 그 혐의를 철저히 조사함으로써 사회질서를 확립하기 위해 그 사건을 엄격하게 처리해야 한다/ Detection of such despicable corruption among approximately 50 foreign schools in a small area, including Gangnam District, could be the tip of the iceberg./ 강남구를 포함하여 작은 지역에 몰려 있는 대략 50여개의 외국인 학교에서 벌어지고 있는 그러한 비열한 부패의 탐지는 빙산의 일각일 수 있다/
The prosecution must roll up its sleeves to root out all kinds of shameful practices by extending its probe to other foreign schools as well./ 검찰은 또한 다른 외국인 학교까지 조사를 확대함으로써 모든 부끄러운 관행을 근절하기 위해 팔을 걷어 붙여야 할 것이다/ The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and many municipal education offices should look into how well foreign schools are operated in other parts of the country./ 교육과학기술부와 많은 자치단체 교육청은 다른 곳에 있는 외국인 학교들이 잘 운영되고 있는지를 조사해야만 한다/
